Re: GDM and Gnome not working, showing only the cursor and wallpaper

I posted a few months back with the same problem. And Now I fixed it. I, in fact forgot about the thread because I changed to xfce after trying a lot of stuff. Even in xfce, network manager icon and battery icon failed to load.
As jkain told it was something to do with /var/run directory.

My Arch Linux installation is in a SSD. But i have moved directories like /var /tmp /opt etc to my HDD partiton. This partition is then mounted as /hdd.

So basically symlink of var in / points to /hdd/var and so on for tmp & opt.

Yesterday I noticed that the "run" symlink in /var directory pointed to

 ../run

The above will come to /hdd directory where the run folder did not exist. The same was the case for "lock" symlink in var directory which pointed to

 ../run/lock

This kind of change has occured after an update of the filesytem package
http://www.archlinux.org/news/filesyste … equired-1/

So I changed the symlinks to point to /run and /run/lock instead of the ones with dots.

I rebooted the system, changed the session to GNOME and logged in. Voila! Gnome-shell loaded. But there is small glitch. The desktop kind of shows only half the area. I mean, the left activity button is at left corner, but at right corner there is Date. The stuff that should be there at right top corner are nowhere to be seen..I think this is separate issue and hope I will fix it soon.

So guys please check the symlinks to /run and /run/lock in /var directory.

Re: GDM and Gnome not working, showing only the cursor and wallpaper

Runnig into the same problem after rebooting this afternoon:

The computer ist booting into the console, the it seems to switch into gdm, the Gnome mouse cursur is showing up (the little wheel), I con move it around, but that's it. No wallpaper, no login screen, nothing.

But I have an Intel video card, using the i915 kernel module.

cat /var/log/gdm/ :0-slave.log.1 tells me:

GLib-GObject-CRITICAL: g_object_ref: assertion `object->ref_count > 0' failed

Re: GDM and Gnome not working, showing only the cursor and wallpaper

Same problem here after update yesterday. When switching to a virtual console (Ctrl+Alt+F2) andn logging in, I can however start Gnome by using "startx".

Re: GDM and Gnome not working, showing only the cursor and wallpaper

This is a bug in the accountsservice package. Downgrading to accountsservice 0.6.25 solves the problem. See my downstream and upstream bug report.

Many thanks, I have the same issue.

Also just tried 0.6.29 update and the problem is still present. I downgraded back to 0.6.25

Yeah, it's still not fixed in 0.6.29, even if an upstream developer said that it was fixed. I reopened the upstream report.

I also tried to upgrade to 0.6.29 - no use. Back to 0.6.25. Thanks for sending the bug reports!

Downgrade helped me too:

sudo pacman -U /cache/pacman/pkg/accountsservice-0.6.25-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz

We only support Arch here: you'll need to ask the Centos community https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … pport_ONLY

This thread is two years old and no longer relevant. Closing.
