mplayer -rootwin option on openbox puts mplayer in front of all other windows. why? and is there anyway to make it on the root window. xscreensaver /user/lib/xscreensaver/[screensaver] -root works fine

No real help here, but I just tested and I get the same result as what you describe in openbox. It seems to work as expected in my other WMs though.

Works fine here. mplayer2 though, maybe that makes a difference.
