Re: [Samsung RV520]NVIDIA driver 304.60 Brightness problem

I can adjust my brightness via Fn combinations in KDE. My problem is that Power Management doesn't seem to take effect. Every time i reboot brightness is maxed out.In addition unticking Dim Display and Screen Energy Saving or changing values doesn't work either.

Edit: Turns out those two options work. Brightness is still being maxed out after each reboot, though.

Re: [Samsung RV520]NVIDIA driver 304.60 Brightness problem

Funny that our results differ.

@archel
Did you try out 304.64 already?

Edit: updated nvidia, nvidia-utils to 304.64 just for the heck of it.
No. Still doesn't work for me: http://twitpic.com/bcdv9d

Re: [Samsung RV520]NVIDIA driver 304.60 Brightness problem

Well, users of archlinux.

It seems like it's not nvidia bug after all, since everything works fine in other DEs but KDE.
Thus, there is no point in waiting for the new releases of nvidia driver anymore.

But you could vote for KDE bugs instead:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=308757
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=296403

That could be much more productive.

For the time being, since the latest Xorg update broke font rendering with old nvidia blobs, I had to switch to nvidia-310.xx and changing brightness manually via ACPI. Stupid shit, but I don't see other sane way.

Re: [Samsung RV520]NVIDIA driver 304.60 Brightness problem

I have a Sony Vaio VPCF1 with the same issue.
Somehow it seems to be related to nvidia driver (directly, or indirectly through some interface changes that powerdevil doesn't like). For me it was working OK with versions < 304.60 and it is still working OK with 310.14-beta (but it doesn't work with latest 310.19).

For the moment I'm running 310.14-beta, because I really don't like typing: echo 66 > /sys/class/backlight/sony/brightness -- every time my system starts :-) (yeah I could run it automatically, but that's not the point, I want it to be properly controlled by powerdevil).

Anyway, if we look at 310.14-beta release notes (http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/50101) we can see: Added support for the "Backlight" RandR output property for configuring the brightness of some notebook internal panels.
Seeing the release notes are not incremental (but rather 310.19 includes most of the 310.14-beta) and missing the backlight item from 310.19 release notes, I can just speculate nvidia didn't include that fix in the latest version.

Well, I can't say I'm a big fan of that

some notebook internal panels

part, but at least that's the most promising news of the month.

10x, iq2luc!

Re: [Samsung RV520]NVIDIA driver 304.60 Brightness problem

Thanks for finding my info useful ajaxas. :-)

Meanwhile we can stick to 310.14-beta (or go with nouveau). For me the beta worked OK since day one, without any issues, and I'm pretty sure it will work OK for you too.

That would take installing nvidia driver directly (besides from pacman), since there's no such package either in official repos or AUR.
I'm not big on that. Gonna stuck with 304.51 for the time being.

Re: [Samsung RV520]NVIDIA driver 304.60 Brightness problem

I don't install them "directly" either :-) I always do PKGBUILDs for everything I install and I don't find in official repos or AUR (that is one of Arch's beauty -- easy to create and maintain your own packages).

Modifying the PKGBUILD from AUR (for nvidia-utils-beta and nvidia-beta) is trivial, if you really want 310.14-beta and you don't fancy editing the PKGBUILD files from AUR, let me know and I will help you (or I can give you the final pkg tarballs if you want).

Re: [Samsung RV520]NVIDIA driver 304.60 Brightness problem

I'm having similar issues. 310.19-2 driver on a Sony Vaio laptop

But even echoing the brightness file does nothing.

Added the acpi_backlight=vendor parameter to grub.

Re: [Samsung RV520]NVIDIA driver 304.60 Brightness problem

http://goo.gl/QCMZT

- PKGBUILDs where tested on x86_64 only (for a 32bit system you need to match the md5 sum, other than that everything should work too)
- Also I uploaded the pre-built packages (just pacman -U them) if you don't want to spend time making them yourself

If you still need some help just let me know.

Re: [Samsung RV520]NVIDIA driver 304.60 Brightness problem

OK, I installed nvidia-beta-313.09 and nvidia-utils-beta from AUR.

Now my laptop's Fn keys work alright, but the brightness level isn't restored at start-up.

In a funny way as well: let's say, my normal brightness level selected in KDE's Power Management is 60%. So laptop starts with brightness level at 100%, but as soon as I push BrightnessDown keys, the brightness becomes 50%, i.e. 1 step down from my settings.

This shit is amusing. Linux rocks, guys.

Re: [Samsung RV520]NVIDIA driver 304.60 Brightness problem

For me nvidia-beta 313.18-1 and nvidia-utils-beta 313.18-1 works OK (properly controlled by powerdevil and restoring brightness levels on KDE startup).

Re: [Samsung RV520]NVIDIA driver 304.60 Brightness problem

Yepp, 313.18-1 works okay.
Behavior is slightly changed: turning brightness to 0 with Fn keys turns the screen off. Doing the same via 'echo 0 > /etc/...' doesn't.
Funny.
Yet the thread may be marked as solved.
