Laptop doesn't turn off after suspend is initiated

I think the title is pretty much self explanatory. The only interesting bit I managed to find in syslog is this:

/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/pcie_aspm: line 9: echo: write error: Operation not permitted

Using Gnome shell 3.6, everything up to date. Laptop is Acer Aspire 5542.

After I click on suspend in the user menu, screen goes blank and everything seems to shut down except that laptop is still on so I have to turn it off manually. I've tried with systemctl suspend and pm-suspend (I don't know if they are actually same commands), same thing.
