Re: hey everyone

It ran fine for me apart from one of the packages which screwed up the install, iirc it was tcl so Id skip tcl and tk. hope that helps, and welcome to the board ;p

Re: hey everyone

basicly there both the same, just the iso includes all the packages.. and with ftp u only end up downloading what you need, my suggestion would be to ftp install only the base packages then pacman -S pkg in everything else you need, this way you wont end up with a clutered system like mandrake / redhat which is full of shite your never use.

Are you a complete newbie ? Have you tried Redhat / SuSe / Mandrake before?

If not than Arch will be a big pain in the ass at first. This isn't a typical newbie distro like Redhat and Mandrake. Redhat and others have nice GUIhelpers for most of the configurating. Arch gives you just the text files, which can be big and something hard to understand.

So I'd advice you to start off with another distro.

Re: hey everyone

i have another question fur the pros... does the pc specs affect the performance of arch that much as the windows line?? i mean my temp linux box is a pentium 2 400 whit 256 ram, will it function the same as my athlon 1900 whit 512?? leave aside hds and such fur this one.. also what storage specs does arch need?? i tried to put it on a piece 700 mb hd but it dsidnt fit. thanks.

Re: hey everyone

sad  i would have helped. Patience and knowledge of your computer's components is all you need. being a virgin to linux your learning curve will be big but Arch could teach you alot. But red hat will get you on the road. When you are ready come back.

Sure the difference is there. The hit isn't that large (I think)
Linux runs veru smoothly on a p2, and with 256 everything work like a charme. Of course, compiling, renderingen, compressing and other very cpu intensive calculations are faster on the Athlon.
If KDE is a bit low try Window Maker, WM is lightweight window manager.

Re: hey everyone

You can exit the man viewer with the 'q' key.

As for pacman, the most used command is 'pacman -Sy <pkgname>' where <pkgname> is the name of the package you want to download and install.

Re: hey everyone

thanks fur the command. i scoured and discovered other things but just couldnt find how to exit the damn viewer besides ctrl+x or was it z?? i already forgot... now fur the developers of arch.. i would like to submit a feature to improve the arch install system. i was thinkin it could be handy fur some if after u select the packages u want, it give a ballpark or exact  ammount of hd space required (like other os setups). then when one is batchin together a linux box of old tech small-assed hds they dont crash the install tryin to have too many packages or maybe who want to keep an eye on the install size. now i may be the lone ranger on this, but ideas never hurt fur potential improvements.
