rdesktop and X CPU usage

When something* within an rdesktop session causes CPU usage by X to spike (and makes my machine effectively unusable), minimizing the rdesktop window does not reduce the CPU usage.  Any suggestions on what I can do to fix or troubleshoot this?

My GPU is

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G86 [GeForce 8400 GS] (rev a1)

and I'm using the nouveau driver.

*By something, I mean a dialog like this, where the circled areas are updating absurdly fast (basically, iterating kB by kB through a couple hundred kB/second).  In fact, when I minimize the rdesktop window and raise it again a few seconds later, the entire screen is black save for this.
