Kernel panic at boot: /usr/lib/systemd/systemd: Exec format error

Hi all,

After upgrading today (which involved both kernel and systemd updates), my system now panics immediately after grub with:
switch_root: failed to execute /usr/lib/systemd/systemd: Exec format error
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attemted to kill init! exitcode=0x00000100

A bit of research on Google hints that you can get this error if you try to run a 64 bit binary with a 32 bit kernel, however this is a 64-bit processor/kernel/system.  If it's any help, it was last updated about a week ago.

I can re-install if needed, but I'd like to understand what went wrong, any help would be appreciated.

Re: Kernel panic at boot: /usr/lib/systemd/systemd: Exec format error

Same with a Arch i686 on Virtualbox. Downgrade to previous systemd and systemd-sysvcompat resolve this.

EDIT: reinstaller 196-2 I removed the shutdown hook from mkinitcpio.conf, regenerate initramfs, rebooted and kernel panic but when reboot using Machine > Reboot, Arch init ok, rebooted again and kernel panic. Back to 195-2 works fine.

Re: Kernel panic at boot: /usr/lib/systemd/systemd: Exec format error

Same problem here in Arch 64 bits with VirtualBox. After the latest linux kernel upgrade, I have got a similar error message except that it actually says:
switch_root: failed to execute /sbin/init: Exec format error
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attemted to kill init! exitcode=0x00000100

I have also a trace about "switch_root Not tainted 3.6.8-1-ARCH"

I have nothing left in rc.conf and had switched to systemd completely (or so I believe)

Fallback fails with the same message.

Thanks for your help

Re: Kernel panic at boot: /usr/lib/systemd/systemd: Exec format error

With linux-lts works ok, with the last linux (3.6.9) still have kernel panics when reboot / shutdown.

Re: Kernel panic at boot: /usr/lib/systemd/systemd: Exec format error

I have tried to restore my guest VM  by using the arch booting iso but with no  luck. First I 've just (naïvely ?) tried to re-install the previous linux kernel in the chroot but then "mkinitcpio -p linux" fails (because of udev, I really didn't bother to look it up further). Then I have tried with the newiest iso (december) and bravely try a "pacstrap /mnt base base-devel" but it fails because many packages were (obviously) already installed.

I have then decided to try a new install from scratch (with the latest december iso). Everything has been working nicely.

Except one little annoyance : using xmonad with the "gnome-terminal" I have got an error whenever I try to launch gnome-terminal (urvt-unicode works ok):
** (gnome-terminal:1102): CRITICAL **: atk_bridge_adaptor_cleanup: assertion `inited' failed

See https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1202239

Cheers
