What was that - black desktop

I was happily sat here using my comp as normal, firefox maximised at the front, and TB open behind it. I was off to do somthing else, so minimised FF. TB is still there, but everything else is black. Minimised TB, and all I have is a black screen.

No DE, no icons, no nothing. Just an unexpected void.

Switched to a terminal and stopped lxdm (which should have just put me back to a terminal - sudo systemctl stop lxdm) - but all I was left with was the same black screen (no Ctrl-alt-Fx, nada).

System isn't crashed (ctrl-alt-del restarted me cleanly), so what's going on?

lxdm, xfce, latest catalyst,  xorg 1.13 - everything up to date from testing, and no problems hitherto. My most recent upgrades:

Any clues?

EDIT: I should add that, although the stock kernel got upgraded, I've been using a custom kernel freshly built for the past week, so I don't think it's that.

I think I have had issues when upgrading linux without rebuilding the graphics module (might be that)? Try reinstalling catalayst+restart lxdm.

Re: What was that - black desktop

I usually rebuild catalyst whenever I start using a freshly built kernel (I've been building my own for 4+ years - just not in the past week), but I may try. I've got a grim idea that catalyst worked without a rebuild on the last kernel build.
