Realtek ALC898 Sound Issues

My sound works; it just comes out of the wrong places. I have a motherboard with this I/O panel:

http://imgur.com/JVQtE

The green port is the standard line out port, and it works perfectly fine with Windows 7. However, nothing comes out of it when running Arch. I do have sound coming out of the side speaker port (gray), but not the green one. The main issue is that I don't really want to switch audio ports every time I switch between Windows and Arch (plus there's definitely a lack of bass from the side speakers). Here's some details about my system:

CPU: Intel Core i5 3550
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77x-UD5H LGA 1155
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 480

It appears that this guy also has the same problem. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Re: Realtek ALC898 Sound Issues

The headphones jack also doesn't work. I'll assume that it's related to this.

Re: Realtek ALC898 Sound Issues

Heema, did you try using the official Realtek drivers?  I've seen on other forums that it works. (See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/996245 comment #30)

I'm waiting for a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H so i'm also worried about this.

tried installing the realtek driver but it gave me some errors during compiling

Re: Realtek ALC898 Sound Issues

Try this and it will work:
./configure --with-cards=hda-intel --with-moddir=updates
make
make install

The param --with-moddir=updates means that your new modules will install in /lib/modules/3.6.9-1-ARCH/updates instead of overwriting your existing drivers.
Once installed, run "depmod -a", then reload your modules (or reboot).

To see if your new modules are loaded:
cat /proc/asound/version

You should see: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.25-5.17rc13.

I'll get the motherboard tomorrow , I'll tell you then.  But I guess it's not going to work for me either.

Re: Realtek ALC898 Sound Issues

I got the motherboard yesterday, got everything up and running.  I didn't bother to try the sound before installing the official realtek drivers.
I installed them using the procedure I told a few days ago.  I reboot, checked the version in /proc/asound/version, and try my music player.  And it works!

I get sound from the green jack in the back and the one in the front.  When I plug headphones in the front it mutes my speakers, as expected.
I got curious and tried other version of the realtek drivers: 1.0.25-5.17rc5, 1.0.25-5.17rc8 and 1.0.25-5.17rc13.  I also tried the default version from the 3.6.9 kernel (1.0.25) and it still works (front and back).

My Specs:
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H rev 1.1 (written on the bottom left)
  BIOS version F14
2.0 Speakers plugged in the green jack
  ALSA only, no pulseaudio
  ALSA versions: 1.0.25, 1.0.25-5.17rc5, 1.0.25-5.17rc8, 1.0.25-5.17rc13
In alsamixer, the selected card is HDA Intel PCH

01:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Barts HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6800 Series]

Re: Realtek ALC898 Sound Issues

I think it worked for you because you have rev 1.1 of the motherboard

Re: Realtek ALC898 Sound Issues

Yeah, that's what they say also on the launchpad forum.

At least new buyers will know the issue is fixed.
