Re: dbus-core removal [Solved]

Is anyone else missing /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/ and /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/30-dbus after updating? Even if I somehow inadvertently removed this directory, shouldn't it, along with the file, be created by dbus 1.6.8-5?

I use linux and I dont understand nothing in this post.

Mind sharing the source for the dbus line to stay the same?

As for your shell doubt check out #17/#18 in this same thread.

I don't have a source, it's just my interpretation. Since the pacnew file has the defaults options, and (I believe) the dbus somehow has been modified in the process of configuring our system, it shouldn't change.
But I could be wrong.

I just need someone to explain why the shell should be changed in dbus (if it should). It may work for some people, but it doesn't mean it will work for me too, or have any other complications in the future. And since my system is working ok for the time, I'm a little hesitant about changing it.

Supplantr, it's been removed. Here's the mailing list thread about the merge and 30-dbus removal:

That was the problem!  I restored 30-dbus from a backup and automounting works again.

Re: dbus-core removal [Solved]

after merging all files (passwd, gshadow, shadow, group) I'm getting the following message:

failed to start authorization manager
see systemctl status polkit.service for details

after that, I can't login login

login incorrect

did I miss anything?

Re: dbus-core removal [Solved]

@CTheGreatDevaluation

You didn't merge the part in passwd related to root/youruser, did you? If so, you have to set your password again (for both).

As for the authorization manager error I do not know if it might be related to this 'lack of password(s)'.

I don't know if the website is lagging or just the package hasn't been removed, but the old dbus package (1.6.8-1) is still available.

Re: dbus-core removal [Solved]

@Scimmia, thanks for that. I should have done my research. And apparently ABS lags behind; even after syncing, dbus-core is still in core, so I was looking at the PKGBUILD for dbus in extra thinking it was the correct one. At least my foolish inquiry helped someone!

you're right, I set a new passwd for root but if I want to set a new one for user I'm getting the following msg

passwd user >><< not found

I guess it might be some kind of a newbie fail

For those with automounting issues? Is your dbus session bus running? It should start automatically, but if it does not you might need to start it manually (as we removed a hack): https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/32952

Is user you actual login name for your user/nonroot account? If not, change it to your actual username and all should be fine.

Re: dbus-core removal [Solved]

@tomegun

So the skel xinitrc with the dbus loop is actually 'useless' right now, correct?

Will re-add the dbus launch line and edit afterwards.

EDiT: Added the dbus-launch --exit-with-session line and automount working as expected.

Thanks a lot root, it's working now, just a simple mistype by myself...

I can login, but the following msg still appears before I'm trying to login and after I logged in (using no login manager)

systemctl status polkit.service says

@CTheGreatDevaluation
you probably missed the polkitd user/group when merging /etc/{passwd,group}, the polkit daemon can't start without it.

I don't know exactly what you mean by "missed the polkit user/group".

I mean that you forgot to merge the polkitd user and group when merging the files and now the polkit daemon can't start because the user is missing on your system. Reinstalling polkit should fix this.

Not as far south as where I am from. Also, please do not attempt to troll me in a support thread...

Re: dbus-core removal [Solved]

I've chose y in the following

 :: Starting full system upgrade...
:: Replace dbus-core with core/dbus? [Y/n]

after the upgrade i got this

 (1/1) removing dbus-core                                                                         [---------------------------------------------------------] 100%
userdel: user dbus is currently used by process 318
groupdel: cannot remove the primary group of user 'dbus'
error: command failed to execute correctly
(1/3) upgrading filesystem                                                                       [---------------------------------------------------------] 100%
warning: /etc/group installed as /etc/group.pacnew
warning: /etc/passwd installed as /etc/passwd.pacnew
warning: /etc/gshadow installed as /etc/gshadow.pacnew
warning: /etc/shadow installed as /etc/shadow.pacnew
(2/3) upgrading dbus                                                                             [---------------------------------------------------------] 100%
New optional dependencies for dbus
    libx11: dbus-launch support
(3/3) upgrading hwids

Then i made the following mistake

I cut/paste to desktop the original files (group, passwd, gshadow, shadow) and renamed the new ones by removing the .pacnew from their name...

The result is that i cannot login as root or as simple user and at arch start up i get: authentication manager failure, failed to start authorization manager
see systemctl status polkit.service for details.

Hoping that you wont judge too hard i'm asking if there is a way to rescue my system and not format. Is it possible to login with ctrl+alt+f1 and undo the cut paste and how i will do that since no user or root exists to login?

Re: dbus-core removal [Solved]

@CTheGreatDevaluation

It might happen though that you 'lost' other groups too and polkit was the one giving you a hard job this time. Therefore I would suggest you one 1) pay close attention to your setup in case other groups are missing and have to be 'readded' as 65kid told you and 2) I think you have to improve your handling of pacnew files in order to, in the future, avoid this kind of mistakes. I myself use vimdiff with a handy set of basic commands which I think does quite the job.

@s0lid7

Check out the replies to CTheGreatDevaluation as he seems to have made the same mistake and the problem is most likely fixed.
If you could also edit your message and use the BBCode for code for your pacman activity it would be the correct thing to do.

Thanks, I'll try vimdiff the next time.

What would you recommend regarding possible missing groups, just readd everything or...?
