voting

Is there any kind of a voting mechanism to influence decisions of Arch Linux maintainers? (This question is academic and may be relevant to any other Linux distribution.)

Re: voting

There isn't, Arch is not a democracy. But if you post your rational, objective observations on the mailing lists, you might be able to influence the maintainers to adopt your viewpoints on specific matters.

Re: voting

Well, then is there a "democracy" distribution?

Re: voting

Not really. Some distros have a council, but they do not hold public votes. However, you will stay a plebian in most systems.

I don't believe so, democracy is generally not a very efficient system if you want to "get things done". Also, if for instance Arch was run as a democracy and the majority vote would be that Arch should become just like Ubuntu, would that be a good thing?

Speaking of Ubuntu though, they did adopt a system recently where you can let them know on what you think your donated money should be spent:

I did not mean that every user must vote. If using Arch Linux has to give a vote, it's like consuming free food gives the consumer the right to decide what food and how often. smile At least there should be an outspoken procedure how to become a voter.

Sounds interesting. I shall definitely look into it.

Well there is, if you are invited to become an official Arch developer, based on your merits, competence and track record, then you can influence the direction in which Arch moves directly. So the best way to achieve that is to start coding. smile

Re: voting

The only votes that matter towards Arch development are ones where only the developers can vote...   As litemotiv has pointed out, the only way to influence Arch is to actually implement what you want then explain why it is better than the current way.  If the developers like it, then it will become part of Arch.

In what universe this is called "influence"?

You just disqualified yourself from your own discussion. Writing software and making people use it is the only thing that matters, when it comes to Linux distributions. Every thing else is just a glorified (but yet sad) form of masturbation.
