Complete system hang with garbled text displayed on terminal

This has happened about 4 times now. I'm using the LTS kernel. Doesn't even respond to magic sysrq keys when this happens. As far as I can see, nothing relevant gets logged.

Never happened before I moved to systemd hmm

(Note I know the second screenshot is a genuine boot failure for a legitimate reason (it's an old screenshot, 1st screenshot literally just happened), I'm focusing more on the broken tty and the total inability to hard reboot with sysrq)

Anyone else experienced this? I'm not quite sure how to describe it so it's difficult to search for
