[SOLVED]web camera not be recognized as removable device by vmware 9

Hi,

I'm running 3.6.9-1-ARCH on laptop, model thinkpad X220, I've installed vmware workstation 9, and installed windows XP inside vmware as a guest,
I want to use the laptop's web camera in windows XP, but this camera is not in the list of removable devices in vmare, any ideas ?

BTW, the camera can work well on the Arch host and I've already added my login to video & audio group.

Thanks,
Liao

I would look for a "usbarbitrator" daemon or service and see if it's running (which it probably isn't).

Re: [SOLVED]web camera not be recognized as removable device by vmware 9

Hi alphaniner,

Great point.
Thanks a lot for pushing me to the right direction, issue resolved !!!

First, I tried to manually run vmware-usbarbitrator, but it gave me a  "Segmentation fault error" :
# vmware-usbarbitrator --info -f

VTHREAD initialize main thread 2 "usbArb" pid 6426
Segmentation fault

Then I took another special look on USB section of VMware in ArchWiki.
Found that my /etc/arch-release is empty and /etc/init.d/vmware-USBArbitrator is missing.

Finally with below commands usb devices get listed in removable devices:
# cat /proc/version > /etc/arch-release
$ ./VMware-<edition>-<version>.<release>.<architecture>.bundle --console --extract /tmp/vmware-bundle
# cp /tmp/vmware-bundle/vmware-usbarbitrator/etc/init.d/vmware-USBArbitrator /etc/init.d/
# chmod +x /etc/init.d/vmware-USBArbitrator
# /etc/init.d/vmware-USBArbitrator start
$ vmware
