[SOLVED] Tearing in videos

Hi,

I watch all kind of videos (.avi, 1080p mp4, 1080p youtube etc.) and experince "tearing" during fast moving scenes/cameras. It is strange because I installed mplayer-vaapi and the processor uilization is ~10-20% in smplayer, or ~50% in youtube flash videos max. I have this problem even with a simple .avi movie. The settings are:

smplayer, video output is set to vaapi (tried with xv as well)
resolution 1920x1080
latitude e5530 with intel i7 3520m 2.9ghz
no dedicated video card, only intel hd 4000 (xf86-video-intel and libva-intel-driver installed).

Tried VLC too with the same result. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

Try searching the forums, you will find multiple threads with explanations and workarounds (no solutions, though).

Re: [SOLVED] Tearing in videos

I do not know what DE you use, but when i used xfce4, i could get rid of tearing by turning off compositing.

Obviously, your experience may vary & I no longer use that DE.

If I'm curt with you it's because time is a factor. I think fast, I talk fast and I need you guys to act fast if you wanna get out of this. So, pretty please... with sugar on top. Clean the [censored] car. -The Wolf

Re: [SOLVED] Tearing in videos

There are different solutions for the various DE's (XFCE, Gnome, KDE, etc.).

Re: [SOLVED] Tearing in videos

I have only Openbox installed with xcompmgr. I do not use any DE.

Thanks for the tip on compositing and these links, I will read all that!

Re: [SOLVED] Tearing in videos

In this case, and if you don't use 3D applications (games etc.), you can get rid of the tearing by creating the following /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf:

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Intel Graphics"
	Driver "intel"
	Option "AccelMethod"	"sna"
	Option "TearFree"	"true"
EndSection
