Hi,
I'm finding it quite hard to debug this, but when trying to connect to mpd, cantata (0.9 or 0.8.3) crashes silently. If I kill the mpd daemon then cantata starts fine; it crashes immediately after starting mpd when I attempt a connection (mpd run as local user, connection through localhost:6600, if that makes a difference). Grubbing around in the mpd logs I find the following, which seems to be a big clue, except that I can't find anything online.
Dec 07 12:34 : avahi: Client Disconnected, will reconnect shortly
Dec 07 12:34 : avahi: Could not reconnect: An unexpected D-Bus error occured
I should say that mpc seems to work fine. Any help much appreciated!
EDIT: These logs seem to be irrelevant to the problem, now that I've had the chance to look a little harder: But I'm still stumped...

hmm... while this is no solution: do you NEED avahi support?
He hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then he realized there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an afterlife.

Wouldn't have thought so. I have a feeling the dbus/avahi issue may be a red herring now that I've had a chance to systematically downgrade and triage some more... The problem seems to lie purely with cantata. As to solving it, I'm lost for inspiration...

I know this doesn't solve your problem as such, but my AUR cantata package (minus KDE libs) works on my KDE system, whereas the one from the official repos doesn't.

Encouraging to know that someone else has the same problem(!).
cantata-qt works great for me. Thanks useradded.
Can anyone else confirm that community/cantata is broken?

Same here.
I have updated Cantata this morning on KDE 4.9.3. It worked. Later I updated to KDE 4.9.4, it broke on two systems. It doesn't work on a local socket and also not on a network connection to another server.
I have tried older version, didn't help. Same with cantata-svn from AUR.
After starting without running mpd it comes up and sometimes stays up after connecting.
cantata-qt from AUR (also 0.9.0) works.

Confirmed. Crashes here silently too. When running it with valgrind it does not crash.
Valgrind output is here, hope this helps: http://codepad.org/HMn1SFIJ
Besides, it worked fine until the latest update to KDE 4.9.4. Cantata version here is 0.9.0-1.

The issue is actively being worked on upstream. If anyone has the time/skills to help Craig with diagnostics etc., please feel free to help out here.
