New nvidia R310 driver broke HDMI audio

Hello.

Updating from nvidia-304.60-3 to nvidia-310.19-2 broke my audio through HDMI. Downgrading to nvidia 304 again fixes the problem (workaround).

I'm using a Nvidia GeForce GTS 250. Kernel is 3.6.6-1-ARCH. Runnning Gnome with standard PulseAudio.

I saved PulseAudio logs using both Nvidia drivers by running:

pacmd list

There are some differences. However, I don't know what to make of it.

nvidia 304

Re: New nvidia R310 driver broke HDMI audio

When you upgraded did you notice the pacman message about cards older than 7xxx need to use the nvidia-304xx package.  It caught me this morning also.

edit: Funny thing though, if you go to the nvidia website, it says that your card is supported by the 310.19 driver.  http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-disp … river.html

If you look in the release highlights it looks like they fiddled with HDMI support so maybe they didn't get it right.

Yeah, I saw that. But the 7xxx cards are back from 2005. My GTS 250 is from the year 2009.

Was this a problem introduced by Nvidia, PulseAudio or ALSA?

Anyone else who had it?

Does HDMI audio work for anyone else with an Nvidia card?

I have a GTX560M, and HDMI audio is working for me with the 310.19 drivers.   The only difference is I am not using pulseaudio, I use alsa directly.

My GT220 works with driver 310.x and alsa, HDMI audio that is.

Re: New nvidia R310 driver broke HDMI audio

I had the same issue with my NVidia ION device (MCP79 chipset) and I'm also using ALSA directly, not through PulseAudio. Downgrading the NVidia package got it working again, thanks for that tip. My device is also listed as supported by the new NVidia drivers though.

Re: New nvidia R310 driver broke HDMI audio

Just wanted to say thank you for this post, I spent an embarrassingly long amount of time trying to figure out why I had lost audio over HDMI after a massive update. I was getting no errors from anything but the sound just didn't come out. I've got an Nvidia ION powered HTPC like mvandeput , I'll paste a little info people might hit searching for alsa/systemd upgrade issues since I did not find this post quickly.

00:08.0 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation MCP79 High Definition Audio (rev b1)

[   12.027071] input: HDA NVidia HDMI/DP,pcm=3 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.0/sound/card0/input4

card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]

snd                    60189  10 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hwdep,snd_timer,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_pcm,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel

Thanks again for posting it, I wasn't even thinking along the lines of a new nvidia driver causing the issue.

Re: New nvidia R310 driver broke HDMI audio

Hey how are things going with your audio issues? My GT520 no longer does multichannel HDMI audio. I only get 2 channel audio. Even Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 get sent to my receiver as 2-channel audio (passthrough, not downsampled). I've tried reverting to the 304xx package but still no joy. What exact nvidia verison are you running? Do you happen to have a copy of the file?

Thanks

Re: New nvidia R310 driver broke HDMI audio

Hello, I'm sorry because of google translate. smile I have a 2-core Atom CPU with Nvidia Ion based HTPC. This also comes out of this problem. The 304 nvidia driver is OK. Interesting problem, I suffered with it for 2 weeks - because it was a fresh install, because of an unfortunate Syu. Fortunately solved smile - I hope the newer nvidia drivers will be fine as long as it does not happen, they will be forced to use the 304.

Re: New nvidia R310 driver broke HDMI audio

Tried to update everything again. Still no HDMI sound with the new Nvidia driver. Even more sad now when the new Steam client is out for Linux. sad

I also did a "aplay -l" with both drivers in order to get some clues. No difference.

Re: New nvidia R310 driver broke HDMI audio

Tested with the new PulseAudio 3.0-2. No difference.

I saved PulseAudio logs again using both Nvidia drivers by running:

pacmd list

The only relevant difference I can see (from diff) is that the IRQ is 23 in the 304 case and 20 in the 310 case. Is that significant?

Re: New nvidia R310 driver broke HDMI audio

Posted the problem at the Nvidia forums.
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topi … -250-etc-/

Since this seems to be a pure Nvidia problem, that thread will be used until a solution is found. Also I would like to thank the people at the PulseAudio IRC for being helpful.

EDIT:
In this thread a guy with the same problem got connected with someone that might help:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi … =5#3722462

Re: New nvidia R310 driver broke HDMI audio

Well, I've tested the 313.09 drivers as described on the Nvidia devtalk forums (link above). It didn't change anything for me. However, it was a little bit hard to install it under Arch. As for now I use the Arch mainstream driver and have an analog audio cable installed as a workaround. I will update my system as usual and try the HDMI for each new Nvidia version that pacman gives me.

Re: New nvidia R310 driver broke HDMI audio

I'm not sure what driver revision did it but HDMI audio output on my GTX 670 was broken recently too. I've tried numerous trouble shooting measures and the only thing that worked was unplugging my second monitor which is attached via a DVI-to-HDMI cable. My guess is that something that changed in the driver's HDMI-related code is making it attempt to send sound out of the DVI port. Hope this helps someone, I'm going to poke my head around on the NVidia forums and see what people have to say.
