Xbacklight doesn't work, backlight, adjusting brightness

I have been unable to change the brightness of my laptop screen. I tried using xbacklight but it had no effect. When I entered
xbacklight -dec 40
into the terminal, I didn't receive an error, but saw no change in brightness. What are some other ways I can change my brightness?

Are you sure you have the xorg-xbacklight pkg installed.  It works here.

Yeah, it doesn't work for me either. Look into your

/sys/class/backlight

There might be more than one folder like acpi_video0, intel_backlight etc.
xbacklight tries changing backlight via acpi_video0. But by manually checking the files inside and echoing different values I found the intel_backlight was the right one for me. So I am using this excellent program Light . It automatically selects the right driver.

xbacklight not working for mee
however changing backlight works under root by echo /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
