To make things permanent:

- Put snd-sbawe in the MODULES array of rc.conf.
- Add your user to the audio group: gpasswd -a USERNAME audio
   You might want to do the same for the optical and video groups.
- Add alsa to the DAEMONS array of rc.conf.

I think I'm finally cluing in on the idea regarding rc.conf and how it's used.  It's actually starting to all make sense.  big_smile

Wasn't this snd-module problem an issue to be dealt with when upgrading kernel to 2.6.13+?

Besides the typical udev upgrade (which also required setting the access rights correctly), I remember people had to:
* disable the module in /etc/rc.conf
* run alsaconf AGAIN
* reenable the module
