Pulseaudio VLC Audio/Video Lag

Hi, I'm having a bit of a problem with video/audio playback with VLC and pulseaudio.
Whenever I open a new file (any format/codec) in VLC, there is a 2 sec lag between the video and audio. I was able to determine the cause was pulseaudio, by messing around with the output module setting for the audio in the VLC settings. There is no lag if I use ALSA direct. But if pulseaudio is selected, then there is a lag.
Another thing I noticed was that the lag was only when opening a file. If I skip to somewhere in the video, the audio will be in sync. I'm still a bit new to the world of linux, so any help would be helpful. Thanks.

Why not just use ALSA direct?

Why not just use ALSA direct?

I would like to know why pulseaudio is doing this.

I noted the same problem myself when Pulseaudio upgraded to version 2.0.1. Even deleting all Pulseaudio and VLC configuration files both personal and system wide does not solve the problem. And it only seems to affect VLC, every other program works fine with Pulseaudio 2.0.1.

Could you do vlc -vvv on a command line, start playing a file and see if these type of sample rate errors crop up, please? If so, it looks like something changed with Pulseaudio 2.0.1 which VLC's Pulseaudio module does not like.

ETA 2: I took the initiative and raised a bug report on TRAC myself: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/6853

It may be helpful if the original poster has the same problem to register on the website and send a message confirming they too have the same problem.

ETA 3: Bug will not be fixed. Downgrade Pulseaudio or consider using an alternative media player. Damn!

ETA 4: Not giving up, another bug report has been setup at PulseAudio's bug tracker, but it's relatively ignored and I hope will not remain that way. Again, if the original poster is having the same problem, they should setup an account on Bugzilla and add their comments to the bug report. Maybe then, it'll get noticed. Could you do vlc -vvv on a command line, start playing a file and see if these type of sample rate errors crop up, please? If so, it looks like something changed with Pulseaudio 2.0.1 which VLC's Pulseaudio module does not like.

ETA 2: I took the initiative and raised a bug report on TRAC myself: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/6853

It may be helpful if the original poster has the same problem to register on the website and send a message confirming they too have the same problem.

ETA 3: Bug will not be fixed. Downgrade Pulseaudio or consider using an alternative media player. Damn!

ETA 4: Not giving up, another bug report has been setup at PulseAudio's bug tracker, but it's relatively ignored and I hope will not remain that way. Again, if the original poster is having the same problem, they should setup an account on Bugzilla and add their comments to the bug report. Maybe then, it'll get noticed. After updating to linux 3.4.0 from testing (to fix ath5k agc issues), the PulseAudio 2.x lag has become far more apparent. With 3.3, the lag was noticeable for things like mutes/volume changes, but there was no a/v desyncing in VLC. With 3.4, the lag was severe.

Using a Xonar STX, this is its lspci line:

05:00.0 PCI bridge: PLX Technology, Inc. PEX8112 x1 Lane PCI Express-to-PCI Bridge (rev aa)

Since the tsched=0 fix is said to only be necessary for "buggy ALSA drivers", presumably there were some significant changes to snd_virtuoso that made this much worse.

So tsched=0 causes some serious problems with WINE. Some things continue to work fine, but many games and applications will have crackly audio that comes from infinitely looping addition and removal of the playback stream given by WINE. If someone has implemented this hack and wonders why their sound in WINE is broken, slow, crackly, or otherwise unusable, this is why.

I have also found, however, that:

 rm ~/.pulse/*
killall pulseaudio

can fix the synchronization issues. VLC and other applications now work fine without the tsched=0 switch. Clearing the .pulse directory should be tried before the tsched=0 line is added.

This fixed my problems completely. Finally I can watch Youtube again AND have VLC running in the background.

BTW, I think that

pactl exit

is the proper way to halt PulseAudio...
