Black Screen When Switching Virtual Terminals

Hi,

I recently got a new computer with Intel's onboard video chipset.  Everything seem to be working fine in X and I got OpenGL working.  But when I switch to another virtual terminal (ctrl+alt+F#), the screen stays black with the monitor's LED blinking as if there's no signal coming through.  When switching back to Gnome (F7), it sometimes terminates X and starts GDM again in F8, while other times it switches back properly.  Also when starting up, after it runs most of the startup scripts, the screen goes black with the LED blinking for 10-20 seconds before GDM comes up.  When I tried to start KDM from the startup script, the screen stays black with the LED blinking.  Does anyone know if this is a classic symptom and how I should deal with it?

Thanks!

Re: Black Screen When Switching Virtual Terminals

it looks like your xorg.conf is not setup right.

type these commands as root :

pacman -S hwd
hwd -u
hwd -x

hwd -x will probe your system and make /etc/X11/xorg.conf.hwd , a sample config file for X that forms a good starting point.

Re: Black Screen When Switching Virtual Terminals

Thanks for the reply!  I tried the xorg.conf generated by hwd, but it's having the same problem.

I also tried one generated by xorgconfig with the vesa driver, same problem.

Re: Black Screen When Switching Virtual Terminals

In that case try to find out if the problem is with X or with gnome/gdm

start your pc in runlevel 3, login as root in virtual console 1

login as root in vc2, execute startx there.
try to switch between vc1 and vc7 (the x screen).

if this works, the problem is not with X.

Re: Black Screen When Switching Virtual Terminals

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.  Same goes for level 3 without X.  I reinstalled Arch, and noticed that the problem occurs after I upgraded the system to use UDev from DevFS.  I've checked that all the lines in /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst are correct for UDev.  Then I noticed the screen goes black while loading hotplug, and level 1 boots fine, so I replaced hotplug with hwd and it's working fine now with all runlevels.

Is this a bug?

Thanks again!

Re: Black Screen When Switching Virtual Terminals

Hotplug seems to miss a LOT of devices.

I had atleast 2 dozen udev error messages with hotplug, changed to hwd/lshwd and now have only 1 udev error message.
