SOLVED latest upgrade broke net/usb/cdrom...

completed the latest pacman -Syu
systemd 196-2 installed
merged rc.conf files
put "blocks" in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
appended "init-/usr/lib/systemd/systemd in grub
rebooted, it loaded went to runlevel 3, put in kdm which loaded, tried firefox with no results, went to terminal and did cat /proc/1/comm with the result of init.
#systemctl (start, restart, enable) dhcpcd@eth0, dbus, pppoe, netfs all give failed to connect to socket /run/systemd/private...   which does not exist
can't find how to get systemd running or what I missed in trying to upgrade to systemd instead of init

Re: SOLVED latest upgrade broke net/usb/cdrom...

Please use

tags (w/o the spaces).

It should be

init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd

Note the equals sign.

Re: SOLVED latest upgrade broke net/usb/cdrom...

you are right I did put it down wrong even after double checking. it is init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd
I did use init-/usr/lib/systemd/systemd once in the grub edit but I got error 27 and had to go in and revise it for it to boot

Re: SOLVED latest upgrade broke net/usb/cdrom...

So did you follow the steps set out in the wiki page on systemd? If so, which steps did you follow?

How exactly did you merge the rc.conf files?

Are you booting with systemd or not?

EDIT: It should be "block" not "blocks". Perhaps you should post your config files. Output from dmesg/journalctl/other log files as appropriate would probably be helpful.

Re: SOLVED latest upgrade broke net/usb/cdrom...

I followed the steps in systemd
1. systemd installed version 196 appended "init-/usr/lib/systemd/systemd in grub
tried adding hostnamectl set but it failed so I rebooted
checked for systemd to be active but cat /proc/1/comm shows init ;not systemd
tried systemctl start/restart dbus, dhcpcd, network, netfs all show   failed to get dbus connection: no connection to service manager
journal is blank, dmesg shows systemd- udev [149] starting version 196
no errors showing in boot log, faillog, daemon log
made sure /etc/mkinitcpio.conf shows "block"
rc.conf is empty because it is supposedly not used now
if I cannot get systemd to show in cat /proc/1/comm then I cannot continue setting hostname, locale, vconsole or continue with systemd wiki

Re: SOLVED latest upgrade broke net/usb/cdrom...

Did you append the *correct* option in grub? init-/usr/lib/systemd/systemd is not correct. You need the equals sign.

You can continue setting hostname etc. Just edit the files using your preferred text editor. The commands given in the wiki will only work if systemd is active but you can set the config files regardless. (When I followed the wiki, it just said to edit the text files - I guess those commands must be new.)

The wiki tells you the relevant files. For example just echo your hostname to /etc/hostname.

Please post grub.cfg and mkinitcpio.conf. Please use

tags.

Re: SOLVED latest upgrade broke net/usb/cdrom...

Thanks,  I did not want to add those files that were not there, I thought that they would autogenerate running the correct programs.
I went in and manually added the missing files /etc/hostname; /etc/vconsole.conf; /etc/confd/network; /etc/autofs/auto.misc,  put the daemons from the original rc.conf and now things are running.
So now all I have to do is repair things as I find them not working correctly.
