Only 1 core/thread maxed out

My laptop is with an intel i7 3520m cpu (2 cores, 4 threads). I use chromium and moonlight for online streaming.

When I watch online stream the cpu utilization starts at 4 x 5-6%. However, after a while 1 core/thread is loaded at 100% and the ventillation starts heavily. The 100% utilization runs in cycles through the 2 cores / 4 threads, so core 1 then core 2 etc becomes overloaded and all the rest remain at 5-6%.

Does anyone know why is it and suggest a solution? Thanks.

No, quite stable ~570 mb usage out of 8 gigs.

Maybe the turbo option where 1 core gets overclocked does this ?

My guess would be it is a problem is a Silverlight, Flash, or Javascript program on the website is causing an infinite loop.

Like yesterday when I would go to the Netflix website using the netflix-desktop & wine-silverlight program. A Javascript program on the landing page would cause an infinite loop and one thread would stay at 100%. I mean not even watching a movie, it was a script on the browsing page. The bottom of Firefox showed that it was constantly trying to load:

contactus.netflix.com

Rebooting, re-installing, installing an older package... nothing would solve the problem. The only thing that would solve the problem was blocking all scripts with the No Script Firefox add-on.

Then as expected, they fixed it server side and now I no longer have the problem.

(Side note: Ya, the URL being "contactus.netflix.com" made the problem un-Google-able, arg)

Well ya, I guess "solved" was the worng word to use. More like that proved it was a malfunctioning script.

I guess you could try installing the netflix-desktop package. It will install Firefox 17.0.1 for Windows with Silverlight. It will be able to play whatever silverlight videos you want, not just Netflix. Maybe it will not have the same problem.

Owe, and make sure to configure ~/.config/netflix-desktop/conf.sh
Set this to 1 so you get a normal firefox.
