I'm currently typing this from my c
llphone because the keyboard in my Sony Vaio Z has stopped working even bios. I'm very scared because this computer is brand new. I've beenrunning such for a month with no issue.
Today installed xwiimote and paired.a wiimote for the first time. After paying for a bit and then letting my computer sleep for a bit, I decided to shut it.down. it then freezes during shutdown and says something about.panic atwhich point I did a hard shutdown with the powerkey. Upon reboot, they keyboard is unresponsive even in the bios and both caps lock and scroll lock lights are lit solid. things to note:
1. laptop itself is not unresponsive just keyboard (and presumably touchpad)
2. fn keys work....
3. during kernel load the computer prints: "can't read ctr while initializing I8042"
4. multiple hard reboots does nothing
5. again I have lost.any ability.to use any key on my laptop's keyboard, so using the bios is out.
I have done much research to little effect.and send very worried now.
can anyone please help ?

If the keyboard fails even on bios, is not arch related.
Anyway, try to connect an usb keyboard and check if that works.
On the other hand, some laptops have a key to disable the touchpad. Maybe yours have something like that to disable keyboard? idk. Check your manual for something like that.
If it is brand new, then it has warranty. And more than hard reboot, turn it off, remove the battery, let pass a few minutes, reinsert battery and try again.

Open source is about opening the source code complying with this conditions, period. The ability to choose among several packages is just a nice side effect.

I understand your line of thinking, but it believe it is an arch issue.
Because,
1. I had used a peripheral through Bluetooth that apparently malfunctioned (wiimote) which is what.caused the kernel panic and ctr error.
2. The fn keys still work
3. I believe that this is a combination of issues. I think the kernel panicked and also.something was changed automatically in the bios. it seems unlikely that a brand new laptop would have such a hardware failure.
4. Other people have very similar issues, but they all had desktops and could use their keyboard in bios, but other symptoms like fn keys working, and.cry.error are the same.
What do you guys think?

I just plugged in some usb peripherals and they work, it seems to just be the "PS/2" mouse and keyboard that don't work, which in my laptop qualify as the built in touchpad and keyboard.
Of course this is a big issue still. Any ideas?

taking out the battery and letting it sit for a few minutes did the trick. I still don't know what happened in Arch to affect the UEFI.
