What packages do you like most in AL?

I am curious to know what Arch Linux users consider as their ten (10) most liked AL packages. I am planning to use this information when guiding newbies and also for the Live CD package selection.

Beside pacman, my most liked pkg are.....:
Kbear (A graphical ftp client for KDE)
K3b (A CD and DVD burning application)
Konqueror (kdebase)
Opera (Browser & e-mail client)

Packages what I consider good:
AbiWord (Wordprocessor)
Scribus (Desktop publishing)
Quanta (HTML editor)

Re: What packages do you like most in AL?

I'll try to think which packages I'd install first on my new system, if I had one smile
I guess that would also be my favourite packages (I don't mention the dependencies):

1. enlightenment
2. mozilla-firebird
3. evolution
4. openoffice
5. xine
6. gimp
7. k3b
8. xmms
9. ripperx
10. audacity

That was hard. There's lots of packages I should have mentioned just to be able to use the ones above.

After being a red hat user for years, I have moved to arch because of Pacman!

1. Pacman
2. Apache
3. MySql
4. Postfix
5. J2SDK
6. SSH
7. CVS - thinking of moving to Subversion
8. Tomcat - but I installed this myself as there is no pacman config

primarily server applications.

Re: What packages do you like most in AL?

I'm going to say Openbox, I'm a newbie, and I love it, I don't have a DE installed, I tried XFCE, but that didn't work for me.

You will also have to consider the PCs power, and just running a WM is a lot faster than a DE me thinks, perhaps you should give them the option upon installation.

I second VLC, I would also through in Leafpad as an alternative to notepad. Finally, LXApperance for the customisation of GTK, its in the AUR, its allows the user to change the icons and themes in one app.

Re: What packages do you like most in AL?

· Firefox (possibly 3)
· Pidgin
· rtorrent
· Vim
· mpd + mpc
· ncmpc
· Gimp
· Inkscape
· ssh
· VLC / mplayer (either)

· TeXLive (I have put it as the 11th, since I know this is too much tongue)

EDIT:
Hey! I just realised how old this thread was. Holy crap!
I'll just leave my post for... hmm... reference...

Re: What packages do you like most in AL?

Well, this thread is certainly being revived from the dead. I'm sure some opinions have changed over the last four years. Continuing the necromancy:

· pacman
· xfce (especially terminal + mousepad)
· deluge
· chromium bsu
· geany
· quod libet
· mplayer
· git
· firefox
· gcc

Now guess which one would not be on a list I made for every other distribution I have tried.... big_smile

Edit: I see other people noticed how old this thread was. What gave it away? kernel 2.6.1?

Re: What packages do you like most in AL?

I thought pacman was there by default (now I'm wondering about Vim, I can't remember...).

I suspected the thread when I saw the strange formatting.

Re: What packages do you like most in AL?

4 years ago I did not use Arch, so it may be okay to put my 2 cents her.

* emacs
* texlive
* lilyterm
* pysol
* lbreakout2
* fotox(x)
* gimp
* abcde
* sithwm

About webbrowsers: Since yesterday I used kazehakase, but now I gave conkeror a try and I am not sure which one I like more yet.

thunar
rtorrent
checkgmail
yaourt

kdebase (for kate)

Other packages leftout of the list:

pidgin
trayer
kooldock
icecat
arora
k3b
yarssr
parted+gparted

Note: you have to be crazy to mix all of the above on my list together, so be responsible! big_smile
