Issue with Pulseaudio and/or ALSA

Not sure if this is a bug or not, but when I upgraded to pulseaudio 3 my laptop speakers would automatically be set to mute after every reboot.  I was able to get sound back by calling

alsamixer -c 0

but was not able to save my settings with

alsactl store

Removed ~.pulse and ~.pulse-cookie in hopes that would take care of things, but again, every time I rebooted speakers would reset to mute.  Guessing there is a config file I need to update, but after I parused the wiki and google the only solution I've found so far is to to downgrade to pulseaudio 2.

Has anyone else had this issue?

If it's any help, only my speakers were set to mute in alsamixer.  Master, headphone, and PCM were all fine.

Been like this on my system for ages.  Certainly predates the v3 bump.

EDIT: Try pulseaudio_ctl for one button mute/umute without alsa deps.
