I have updated to awesome 3.5 and made the necessary changes to the config, however the taglist squares appear bigger (for the default theme). In 3.5 they appear at a correct size of 8x8 px as opposed to 3.4.x where they appeared as 5x5 px.
I have made new images for the taglists (so technically this is "SOLVED"), but I am wondering if anyone else noticed this? Was this just a bug in 3.4.x that was fixed in 3.5?

Actually, my taglist squares appear a LOT smaller. And I haven't touched my themes at all, so it had to have been the switch to 3.5

Did not notice any change in my taglist squares from 3.4 to 3.5. Not using any theme though.

Yes, it looks bigger on my setup as well.
Also, the values in my theme don't get read. And they got rid of awsetbg, which I think is a shame. I've got no idea how I can easily set a wallpaper chosen randomly from a directory now.
EDIT: Google helped. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7015 … ell-script
I now use the following script, which gets the relevant directory as an argument:
#!/bin/bash
export bg=$(find "$1" -maxdepth 1 -mindepth 1 -type f -print0 \
| sort --zero-terminated --random-sort \
| sed 's/\d000.*//g')
feh --no-fehbg --bg-max $bg
And I put it in my ~/.xinitrc.

No change on my laptop, but on my desktop, the squares were much bigger, yes. I have since downgraded to 3.4 because I was getting segmentation faults with 3.5.
Laptop and desktop both use nvidia driver and copied the new rc.lua on both installs. Not sure where the discrepancy is as both are fairly recent installs of Arch.

If anyone is interested, it was indeed a change in 3.5:
