Best way to share user configs

This monthly thread would improve if called "Arch Screenshots and Configs". Not only posting of screenshots but also giving information how its done and configs to download.

Re: Best way to share user configs

rasat, i actually had an idea for how to distribute config files and stuff. Why not make packages out of your ~? Wouldn't that be an easy way for distributing configs and other things? Someone should write a script that can make a pkgbuild out of your ~ so all you have to do is run makepkg.

Uhmmm, it's probably easier just to make a tar.bz2 file, upload it somewhere, and then others can unpack it in there home-dir.
Making packages for it, and so using pacman is ridiculous, as pacman should be used for system-wide things only.
And others, it is not possible with pacman, as how would you install the same package twice, so user A and user B.....you would also need to make a patch for pacman, which is a non-issue

I think that is a little redundant - if people want to share their configs they will and if they don't they won't.  I think anyone that looks at these threads can see that it is ok to post your configs, I can't see how changing the name would help smile

Re: Best way to share user configs

Well, it does actually IMO becuase people may start posting configs without screenshots.  I am happy for screenshots with or without configs but I do not feel the same about configs with or without screenshots tongue

If we want more configs to be posted, then the change of name will help. The usage/value of this thread will increase when you not only see the screenshots but can also use them. But if we want to avoid configs without screenshots, then don't change the name.

Re: Best way to share user configs

I think the best thing would be if someone set up a config sharing site!

It would be very easy to do on system like drupal or e107.  People could register and submit their configs to different download sections based on what sort of configs they are.  My site runs e107 so it's not hard to see how easy it would be big_smile

It would be easy to set up - I could do it in about 30mins but I think I have done more than enough of that!  There seems no need to officialize it to any degree and burden the server even more.

I guess user-cb could host it couldn't?  If you restrict people to posting only small config files with no icons and link to big stuff offsite it should be tiny bandwidth usage.

That's what I would do anyway smile

The repo is ready!

How to upload? I give the host and pw on request, or...?

Re: Best way to share user configs

I had the idea to start a config sharing site a while back, and have yet to really work on it at all.  My idea has a bit broader scope and would encompass all sorts of config files, not just Arch specifically...thus it will take some time to figure out/program a backend to run it all.  I registered the domain http://configexchange.com/, so I'll let you guys know if/when I come up with something for it.
