Playing music CDs

I'm well aware that most music CDs these days won't play in computer drives anyway.  But what about 'older' disks?  Is there a new trick to getting music CDs to play?

I can get cdtool to recognize my IDE drive, but not my SCSI drive.  It can read the track information for /dev/hdc fine.  It will not, however, play it (appears to play, but without sound).  Data CDs are no problem for either device, including automounting, no problems.  Are we just talking DRM for linux, or is there a way to accomplish this?  XMMS, is thus far, much more useless for any of this, from what I can tell, as it requires reading from directories.  Fairly confused.

Re: Playing music CDs

I don't know how relevant this information still is, but a few years ago all linux CD player apps required you to have the cable going from your CD-ROM to your sound card inside your case. If you didn't then it was tough luck, rip the CD if you want to listen to it. Not sure whether that's changed on a wide scale or not but I know KsCD has an option to allow digital playback or something. Check that and you should be right smile Look in other apps for allowing digital CD playback, it's something along those lines.

Ahh ok cool. Just wasn't sure, I don't think I've ever played a music CD on my linux box. I just rip them and the stack them in the bottom of my wall unit tongue

Re: Playing music CDs

this was something that i spent about 5 hours trying to figure out one day. In the end, I realized that I had the cd volume in alsamixer muted.

Re: Playing music CDs

spent similar having bought a soundcard, and speakers. Dummy here was tryna make it all work, only to find he'd plugged the speakers into the onboard, not the new card.

Re: Playing music CDs

Just a bit of advice: do not hook your CD drive up to the sound card's CD-in socket. Having the CD-input cable hooked up actually seems to cause sound problems with certain hardware - for example, you get weird humming and buzzing when playing CDs on VIA VT8235.

Re: Playing music CDs

remember you do not mount an audio CD,  you just insert the CD and start your player. you should also check your alsamixer settings to be absolutely positively certain that your CD is not muted. Do you get any sound from anything e.g. xmms ?? Did you run alsaconf after you upgraded?

Makes me remember when I use to get into car audio stuff and how if you run the wire to the amp next to the alternator you get similar problems. Maybe you are experiencing the same thing? Maybe rerouting it will help? :?

Re: Playing music CDs

Just unplugging it does the trick. It isn't needed, unless you are using really super-outdated software.

Re: Playing music CDs

Gullible Jones:  I've never had any problems using the CD Audio analogue cable connection from CD-ROM to sound card and actually always use the audio cable.

I prefer to use the CD drive's hardware DAC rather than have the cpu running digital audio extraction.  Why load up system resources when you've got a purpose-built hardware device to do the same thing?  It's then as simple as

cdcd play

to play a CD, no need to have an X digital audio player running.

It is unlikely the sound quality would be worse unless you had an electrical interference problem or a faulty sound card.  Your 'weird humming and buzzing' sounds like a hardware fault, maybe?

In any case, people needing audiophile-grade sound quality would not likely be using a PC CD drive anyway, IMHO.

Just my 2c.
