[Solved] X won't start on Acer Aspire V3-551G-8454 fresh install

I'm not exactly sure if this is a problem with the switchable graphics, but X has so far failed to start every time.
This is a new install, so I haven't gotten X to open even once before on this laptop.
The errors I get in Xorg.0.log:

(EE) fglrx(0): V_BIOS address 0x99990 out of range
(EE) fglrx(0): V_BIOS address 0x99990 out of range
(EE) fglrx(0): DAL initialization failed!
(EE) fglrx(0): Display Infrastructure Failed
(EE) fglrx(0): PreInit Failed
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

So I'm not sure what exactly to do, because nothing I've tried has made any difference in this error message..

And what have you tried?  Don't keep us in the dark.

Do you have any xorg.conf files?  If so, try without them.  What video driver are you using?

Re: [Solved] X won't start on Acer Aspire V3-551G-8454 fresh install

Ah, sorry. I've installed the Proprietary drivers, generated an xorg.conf with aticonfig, and fumbled around with some switchable graphics tutorials. I'm not sure they are the problem, though. I've also tried adding different resolution modes to Xorg.conf to no avail.

Trying to start without an Xorg.conf throws errors about failing to load modules and that there are no drivers available.

(EE) Failed to load module: "ati" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module: "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module: "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module: "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No drivers available

Have you tried with the open source drivers (with no xorg.conf)?  Just as a trouble shooting step it would help narrow down the issue.

Re: [Solved] X won't start on Acer Aspire V3-551G-8454 fresh install

With no xorg.conf, using the open source drivers, I get these errors:

(EE) Failed to load module: "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module: "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module: "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Screen 0 deleted because of no matching config section.
(EE) Device(s) detected, but none match those in the config file.

EDIT: I had blacklisted radeon in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf when trying to get the catalyst drivers to work. After removing that, I rebooted and was presented with SLiM, which I had installed earlier.
It would seem that simply installing the open source drivers fixed the problem.
