I suspect it was a recent update but I am not sure what updated that broke my icons and thumbnails. When I go into folder with Thunar, some of the icons get mixed up and don't correct themselves until I run the mouse over all of them. They quickly get mixed up again. Also when I enlarge the icon sizes to get a better view of the thumbnails, they get garbled or mixed up and don't correct themselves until I scroll or run the mouse over them. They quickly get messed up again after a few second or if I restore the size and enlarge again. very strange. Other times I will see a thumbnail picture and it looks like it's on top of another icon (pictured). other icons are cut off.
I don't know what information to post. I am using XFCE 4.10, I have compiz installed but the problem persists in compiz and xfwm. I tried reinstalling ffmpeg and the thunar thumbnailers packages but I am not sure what package is specifically related to this. I don't know what else info to put since I am clueless on how this happened.
Thanks for any help.

If indeed it was a update, it could have just been a bad update, in which case you just need to wait a few days till the package maintainer fixes it.
It always makes me laugh when people complain and rage over any distro's management ideal, when this is a linux community, and you could always make your own distro and experience the pains yourself.

Are you by any chance using the testing repo?
The culprit seems to be cairo 1.12.10. Downgrading to version 1.12.8 (the one currently in extra) solved this problem for me.
I've filed a bug report:
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33463

thanks that solved it

cairo 1.12.10 is now in [extra], but the problem persists (it's an upstream bug).
While this get sorted out (or not) upstream, I've made an AUR package for cairo 1.12.10, patched to revert the two offending commits:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/cairo-patched/
It seems to work for me, but use it at your own risk. I'm not a "real programmer", so I might've screwed up somewhere

Forget about the previous post. Also, good news!
cairo 1.12.10 from [extra] has just been updated with the same fix, so my (now unneeded) package was deleted.

thanks, glad they fixed it!

ahem, sorry to bring bad news, but updating to cairo 1.12.10-3, which presumably contains the upstream fix, still results in images breaking up into tiles when zooming in GIMP.

GIMP works fine over here. I am using cairo 1.12.10-2.

weird; then i'll have to try it again, with all available cairo versions. but if i remember correctly, there were othes in one of the bug reports (upstream & arch), that had the same problem with GIMP. and i did try it with intel as well as ati video cards and drivers...

Sadly, it looks like cairo 1.12.10-3 from [testing] brought back the bug

I have downgraded back to 1.12.8 While 1.12.10 fixes the icon problem somewhat, thumbnails and other pics on the web get screwed up. I have the 1.12.8 package saved if anyone needs it. Hopefully the devs are aware of this.

I've just noticed that the bug has been reopened, so yes, they are.
While 1.12.10-3 is as bad as 1.12.10-1, 1.12.10-2 is working perfectly here.

The new cairo 1.12.12 from [testing] seems to solve this problem (once and for all?).
It works for me, at least.
