USB flash drive bootable OS/Distro? Which one is good option?

Recently the hard drive on my laptop finally died (I hear very loud hard clicks when I was trying to mount it on another computer, so its probably for good now).

At the moment I am trying to decide what laptop to buy... either one of those chromebooks or something in ~500-600 USD range (I probably could buy new hard drive too but probably I will not bother and just buy new laptop eventaully once I decide which one)

However, till now, I been thinking what are some options for USB flash drive bootable OS... either Linux or maybe something similar to Chrome OS or that similar one to it. I want to be able to use this old laptop just for plain internet access and basic things like that... maybe something similar to chromebook.

What would you all recommend?

No.
Open source is about opening the source code complying with this conditions, period. The ability to choose among several packages is just a nice side effect.

You might consider puppy linux. Its small, fast, and can run in memory.

What are you actually looking for?  ANY linux distro - and many other OSs - can be installed on a bootable usb.

If you don't offer any criteria, you're just going to get a random list of distros/OSs.
