I have updated Firefox on 3 different machines, all with different graphics processors, but get the same glitch on every one. It appears for a few seconds as Firefox starts up, and consists of a window in the top lefhand corner of the screen showing the desktop background.
Has anyone else seen this, and can anyone suggest a fix?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, I noticed it. It seems to have appeared in Firefox 18.
I never would have considered it something that I needed to fix.

I know it's only cosmetic (and for a few seconds) so I tend to agree.
I just wondered whether it was an indicator of something else, or a wrong setting peculiar to my systems.
Thanks for putting my mind at rest!

Are you using cairo 1.12.10 from testing?
I have encountered glitches with this version within Midori.

No - just the regular cairo 1.12.8-2 from extra. My DM is Openbox (with fbpanel)

This is the dock area of openbox, nothing to be worried about.
It is always set, but is used only when there is a dock app running, it shows off briefly sometimes.

^ I don't think it is related to openbox, I have the same issue with awesome-wm. But anyway, as was said before, it seems to be purely cosmetic and nothing to worry about...

It appears for me as well (dwm + intel i915). It is only there for a split second though, not for seconds as the op said. It was sufficiently brief that I didn't give it a second thought.
