I've installed gnome and gdm, followed the wiki (so loaded the daemons) and gnome froze on boot. This is true for both user and root: from gdm and runlevel 3 and $startx with (exec gnome-session in .xinitrc) as well as just $gnome-session
Then I
added 127.0.0.1 aldebaran to my /etc hosts since I've read (somewhere on the forums) that sometimes a badly set hostname will affect it (So i tried without that line too)
Same problem.
#
# /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
#
#<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname>
127.0.0.1 aldebaran
127.0.0.1 aldebaran.localdomain aldebaran
# End of file

I had the same problem with gnome and KDE, too.
try turning on your lo network interface in /etc/rc.conf, even if you don't need it, gnome will...
In Linux there are no secrets!

Well, the problem is SOLVED. I've deleted everything .gconf* and .gnome from my home and some others, and I am now in gnome.

acetylcholine,
did you manage to solve you problem on kde as well? I am experiencing a similar issue (kde totally freezes. Not directly on startup, but if running ANY application) ... I already tried deleting my ~/.kde - directory, but that didn't help :?
I already opened a thread on it - here ....
