Valve needs some clever ideas on how to handle dependencies and updates.
It would be great to have a solution that uses the usual Linux way of doing things is distro independed and still respect 3 points:
1. Client has to update itself before connecting to the network and shouldn't ask for root everytime.
2. New dependencies might make it into the client and have to be installed in some way when auto updating.
3. Everything sould be nice, contained and secure and not to hacky and has to handle multiarch.
I don't know if a new Group or User "steam" might help to solve privilege problems in a clean way.

Believe I read a while ago in swedish IDG that during some benchmark test that compared L4D2 on Windows( DirectX and OpenGL) and Linux (Ubuntu) OpenGL, And (suprisingly?) found out that Linux performed better than Windows . Something about how Linux is built that proved to be superior(!) Can't recall details.
Anyone have more info on this? Would be fun if gaming on Linux is not only for the enthusiasts like us but a real option for the "casual" gamer.

It would seem that all though I couldn't load Oil Rush on the steam version - according to the Oil Rush official site they're waiting for Oil Rush to be officially on the Linux list sometime this month which is also mentioned on its facebook page so for me it's just a matter of wait.

Half-Life and CS 1.6 are playable on Steam Linux client now. Very unexpected!

Great news.
I really have to test this.

Well I've spent the entire day playing half life and it is so far very stable considering it's in beta - I do hope however they'll port Half Life:Opposing Force to linux.

I installed Steam yesterday to get TF2 (a friend of mine proverbially twisted my arm about it so we could play online ), and everything works quite smoothly, except for sound, in that I have none in-game, and there doesn't seem to be any way to configure the default output device through the in-game settings.
Offline
This should fix sound.
export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa

Yes this should fix it. What desktop enviroment are you using btw?

Xfce, with Compiz as the WM. I haven't had the chance to try this yet, but I'll try to remember to do so as soon as I get home.

TF2 is looking for pulseaudio by default. With XFCE you're probably using alsa so this should fix it.

Ah, didn't know it used pulse. I suppose it makes sense, though, given that this is officially an Ubuntu release, and Ubuntu ships with PA.
I don't even have PA proper installed (only libpulse), so it's no wonder there's no sound with the defaults.

Just tried it, and it works great! Thanks.
Now I just need to stick it in my .xinitrc…

CS:S is now available too, but the game crashed my pc on both times that I tried. First on MOTD, second time after a minute of joining.

Jukkan, yesterday there was a steam update as well. Perhaps this will solve your problems?

It did not, but changing export __GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS from 1 to 0 from hl2.sh did!

Added it to wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/St … on_joining

Cool. Seems that with the next version it is considered stable.
Hope to see a flood of new Valve Titles coming to Steam with every passing week.

Not surprising really, it's never been what I would describe as unstable since the start of the open beta. There was one hiccup last week where it wouldn't launch at all, but they fixed that within a day (and the fix itself was available earlier, for those that went looking for it).
I'm looking forward to playing more and more games natively on Linux.
Can't seem to get a Tux item though. :c

Most say that it will come with the next TF2 update. After that you can earn the tux item.
Client works like a champ. Only a few times they killed it with an update to their Steam Runtime.
Sam Latinga the guy behind SDL was quick to roll out temporary fixes in the form of tar.gz's and shell scripts.
Even over the weekend the Valve team seemed to be active in the github bugtracker.

So I've installed steam and tf2, but even with the options on the lowest setting I get horrible FPS. On windows it runs maxed out easily. Is there a way to check it is actually using my video card (and not mesa or whatever) ?
I have catalyst installed and it seems to work in minecraft.

Probably you already know it but appears, standing on what BBC News reports, that Valve is thinking on approach the video game console market with a product based on Linux. This may be the main reason why they created a port of Stream for this OS.
They recently laid off key people on their staff too. Hope this won't affect their initial plan.

That's well known, and heavily discussed in this thread (or another similar thread).
