Hi!
Really thanks for this great FM!
I'm having an issue (i guess...): i'm using xfwm4 as standalone wm (practically i only start from .xinitrc xfwm4 and xfsettingsd, plus other things i need, and spacefm --desktop).
It works great, but the option "show wm menu when desktop is right-clicked" isn't working. If i tick it, i won't have any right-click menu (neither the normal one, without wm menu/applications launchers)
Any hint? Is a known issue?
Thanks!
Tell me if you need some more info!

Another user just confirmed for me that he doesn't see a menu with xfwm either.  My next question would be does xfwm provide such a menu, or perhaps this is handled by xfdesktop (which should not be running and managing the desktop if spacefm --desktop is).  I'm not positive (not intimately familiar with this part of the code offhand) but I assume if spacefm doesn't handle the click on the root window (desktop) then it just passes through to be handled or not by the wm.  In the case of Openbox, the wm produces a menu.

EDIT: Also jfyi wrt spacefm's provided desktop menu, although you cannot currently add custom menu items to it, if you right-click on an icon on the desktop, you can add custom items after some of the menu items in that context menu.

Re: SpaceFM - A Customizable File Manager

Yes, xfdesktop is not running...btw tried on openbox and yes, it worked. So probably you're right, i should start xfdesktop to have my menu shown.
Thanks for your time!

The only problems I have are that it seems to assume that I want my wallpaper stretched only to the edge of tint2, although tint2 is transparent, so it doubles the top of the image behind tint2 rather than going all the way.

If you're still using spacefm your input may be helpful here - thanks.

Re: SpaceFM - A Customizable File Manager

I am noticing some strange behavior in SpaceFM with the latest Parcellite (1.1.3) running.

If I enable the "Use Copy" option in Parcellite, SpaceFM will sometimes fail to cut/copy an item on the first try and I have to cut/copy it again.
If I enable the "Use Primary" option in Parcellite, then upon selecting some text (inside SpaceFM) the text will near instantly become unselected.

BTW I reported this issue on the Parcellite bug tracker too:

Re: SpaceFM - A Customizable File Manager

With SpaceFM 0.8.5 I now have one less GTK2 program on my computer. Yay!

Anyways I decided to try SpaceFM's desktop functionality and heres my observations of using it alongside awesomewm:

1. The wallpaper is set on all tags. Good.
2. The desktop only shows up on the tag its called from. A side effect from awesome's idea of "tags" I suppose?
3. I cannot get awesome's right-click menu to show up on the desktop.
4. The first desktop icon ends up slightly covered by awesome's builtin panel.

I've yet to find a decent GTK3 theme so it looks like it's an ABS build with GTK2 for me. The GTK3 version looks horrendous here. It's hands down the best file manager I've ever used though, no matter what it looks like.

Ok, that was pretty painless and quick... lovely GTK2 again!

Re: SpaceFM - A Customizable File Manager

It seems that since version 0.8.5, whenever i start conky, my spacefm --destkop (i manage my wallpaper through that) crashes, or, at least, it becomes black (no more wallpaper image).
May be i must change something in .conkyrc...but i would like to understand what the problem is related to. Before (spacefm 0.8.4) everything was perfect (same conky config)!
Btw, thanks for your work!

EDIT: here is the relevant part from conkyrc:

own_window yes
#own_window_colour 151515
#own_window_transparent yes
#own_window_type desktop
own_window_type override
#own_window_class Conky

I tried also with own_window_type desktop enabled, or own_window no...I've been playing around with these values, and now i have my wallpaper, but the conky-filled area has no background (current values are the above ones)
EDIT2:  a screen to clarify: http://s2.postimage.org/g017p8gll/problem.png .

FlatStudio theme looks pretty good on GTK3, but I have rebuilt it for GTK2 since I have no GTK3 apps installed. And it looks better, too. smile

The shimmer project themes (bluebird, greybird, etc) are rather nice. Also there is a spacefm-gtk2 in AUR.

I've actually been looking again at GTK3 themes today in the hope of finding something I like. I've tried greybird before but will look at the other suggestions here - thanks. Thanks also for the heads up on spacefm-gtk2 in the AUR, will use that in future instead of messing about with ABS.

Re: SpaceFM - A Customizable File Manager

@nierro - which window manager are you using?

Here's the relevant part from my Conky config which works great with Compiz...

double_buffer yes
own_window yes
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_argb_visual yes
own_window_class conky-semi
own_window_type desktop
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager

p.s. I don't have the desktop managed by SpaceFM (or at all).

Edit: Oops, I see you already mentioned the WM is xfwm4.

Re: SpaceFM - A Customizable File Manager

@nierro:  I'm not a regular user of conky, but there were no particular changes between 0.8.3 and 0.8.5 that I would expect to affect this.  With 0.8.5, the GTK3 build came out of beta, so some distros (like Arch) will build for GTK3 now.  So spacefm --desktop running under GTK3 may be related to your change.  If you think it's crashing, try starting spacefm --desktop from a terminal so you can see any warnings, etc.  Also try using adwaita theme to see if it affects the issue.  By all reports the desktop has been working okay under GTK3, but be sure to use a theme compatible with your version of GTK (else memory leaks and other serious issues can result, beyond the control of spacefm).  Also see some conky+spacefm tips here

Also to clarify, please note that I am continuing to support GTK2 in addition to GTK3 in spacefm, and will do so for the foreseeable future.  So the intention here is not to force anyone into GTK3, just to provide the option.  GTK3 has in general been running well, but the GTK devs describe it as unfinished, and it is prone to more changes and potential breakage, especially from themes.  GTK2 is much quieter.

Re: SpaceFM - A Customizable File Manager

Uhm, no, it's not working. Tried with your conky tips, but they won't change anything. The result is the same as the picture above posted.
Starting from a terminal, return no error neither problem. Only, when i ctrl+C to kill it, it says "Gdk-ERROR..." but i guess it is related to ctrl+C. I think i'm gonna try spacefm-gtk2 from aur, and i'll let you know!
EDIT: no problems with spacefm-gtk2 and

own_window yes
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_type override

in conkyrc.
Hope this can be helpful for someone!  I guess xfwm4 is not playing well with gtk3, that's the only thing i come up with.

@nierro:  That's for the info on the spacefm-gtk3 desktop + conky + xfwm4 issue - I added it here for now - you might track that for any further input/resolution on this.

Thanks! I'll keep up with that! (well, indeed, since xfce4 is planned to stay with gtk2 at least another year, there is really no hurry in using spacefm-gtk3! )

Since the last Spacefm update, it no longer holds gtk themse that are set for the system. That is even worse, because I am using is as desktop manager.

SpaceFM in repos is built with gtk3 now, so obviously gtk2 themes won't work.

Doesn't GTK3 work only on Gnome? I have xfce and no way of turning it on.

GTK3 apps do not require gnome, just that the gtk3 libs be installed.  When using spacefm built for gtk3 (the new Arch default), a gtk3 theme is also recommended (eg gnome's adwaita theme or a 3rd party theme), because GTK3 looks and works ugly with no theme.  Configuration of a GTK3 theme is done differently than GTK2, so a GTK2 DE such as xfce won't do it for you automatically - you can install a theme tool or do it manually by editing GTK3 config files in your user's home/.

If you prefer to continue using spacefm with gtk2 libs, you can install spacefm-gtk2 from the AUR instead of spacefm from community.  (By default, spacefm still builds with gtk2 support, and gtk3 is optional, but it is up to the distro packager (Barthalion in Arch's case) whether they provide a gtk2 or gtk3 version, or both, which is recommended.)

Re: SpaceFM - A Customizable File Manager

Just a minor cosmetic issue: in the dialog for creating a new folder, the button for Open has no icon and the text reads "& Open". I don't know if the ampersand is supposed to be in place of the icon but it looks out of place whether your have icons enabled for buttons or not.

Edit: BTW I'd appreciate any feedback on this issue I reported earlier:

Thanks - this is by design.  "& Open" stands for "Create & Open" - the icon is omitted to save space, looked ugly with it.

I've noted that issue - it's on the list of things waiting for an initial review.  If you'd like tracking on the progress of an issue please open an issue - that way you'll receive an email when changes are made.
