[SOLVED] m_sensors can't detect the chipset so I can't set up my fans

I have overheating problems with my Latitude E5520
(to be exact: http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshoo … ag/50GBMQ1)
so I wanted to see what my fans are doing;
I went through https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lm_sensors
and then through https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fan_Speed_Control
and I had to stop at "The first line of the sensors output is the chipset your motherboard uses to read the speeds, temperatures, and voltages.".

My output:

[sms@sms ~]$ sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:        +25.0°C  (crit = +107.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0:  +66.0°C  (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0:         +66.0°C  (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1:         +62.0°C  (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

is telling me nothing: I bet my chipset is not called "coretemp-isa-0000"...

I realize it doesn't seem to mean anything, but my sensor gives the same name and I'm running an i7 sandybridge, so I don't think it is a mistake.  From what I've read, it is just listing the sensors it finds, starting with zero.  Subsequent sensors, if they were found, would be listed coretemp-isa-0001, coretemp-isa-0002, etc.

I laugh, yet the joke is on me

yes, but to there is no sensor like that in /etc/sensors.d/sensors.conf and the examples are different... it's something with this sandybridge then - they just didn't set it up yet... in the software so you can't controll your fans. just found a lot of patches to this, every for each motherboard - i need just find the one for my one. smile

Re: [SOLVED] m_sensors can't detect the chipset so I can't set up my fans

AFAICT, the Latitude E5520 uses Intel's HM65 Express chipset. From a quick Google, I see no indication that a fan control patch exists for that chipset. Additionally, none of the nine laptops using that chipset reported in tthe Arch Wiki contain any reference to controlling the fans an, in fact, the report on the HP Probook 4530s notes that lm_sensors does not expose information about the fans--precisely the same as your complaint.

Feel free to Google around, but I fear you won't be able to manually control your fans.

Regards,

That sums in up, thank you.
