Whats Better...

The mplayer plugins or the VLC plugins for Firefox.

What plugins between the two would have greater support on web pages and can I use both at the same time?

Just curious...

Thanks!!!

Re: Whats Better...

I have to admit to not trying the vlc plugins, but the mplayer one has given me nothing but grief, with constant freezing/hanging.  I will have to see if the vlc ones are any better.

Re: Whats Better...

gxine plugin all the way baby (not to mention it's my package, heh)

[NOTE: for right now gxine depends on firefox, because of some libs it needs.  mozilla will also work, if you use that instead, but you have to manually ignore the dependancies]

Does teh gxine plugin support all the codecs that mplayer and vlc does?

If so, maybe I will have to check it out.

Thanks!!!

It uses xine-lib, and supports all the codes that xine-lib does (which, for the most part, just uses the mplayer codecs, though I have run into a few .asf files which only worked in mplayer).

Re: Whats Better...

Xine plays everything that MPlayer does. However, the GXine plugin has trouble with certain formats that Xine supports perfectly well. Certain Quicktime movies, for example, will play if you download them and play the file, but will not play if you try to stream them with the plugin.

MPlayer-plugin plays everything, but likes to hang in its current incarnation.

VLC does not play a damn thing.

Totem's plugin looks like it could be promising, but due to a hideous bug, cannot play anything at all - not even Ogg Theora. You'll just get a blank screen.

Helix Player is awful, and I don't think I'd trust Realplayer.

(It's not just you: when it comes to streaming media, a purely GTK-based desktop has *serious* deficiencies.)

Kaffeine's plugin is supposed to work very well, but Kaffeine uses QT. And if you use KDE, you've already got it made...

Re: Whats Better...

There's also the option of using mozplugger - It's in community. It works with mplayer, but not like the plugin (not sure exactly how it does it actually)
I know it works fine with Opera while the mplayer-plugin doesn't work...
Of course you need mplayer installed

Re: Whats Better...

you might want to change your title so people know what "Whats better..." is actually refering to.
