ati hdmi audio issue

I am using a ATI Radeon HD5850 with open source driver. The HDMI Audio works basically, DE's sound effect, firefox with youtube webm, gaming with wine
but NOT with a media player (vlc/mplayer)
The player could only have sound when other program have already "initiated" the audio. For example, having a youtube video playing and start vlc/mplayer. I have to keep the youtube video playing if I want to switch the audio track, otherwise all audio would be gone before I shutdown the media player.

Something similar is mentioned here. But it only comes with workaround with Windows. I even tried to echo "high" to "profile" of powersaving, but it still doesn't work. (Not to mentioned that powersaving is not enabled in Linux by default)
Anyone know if there is a solution in Linux too? Or still a totally unsolved upstream bug?

Re: ati hdmi audio issue

Okay I found a fix/workaround myself.
Actually in my case it's about the sampling rate. The player needs to resample to audio to 44100Hz (default in pulseaudio) itself, which I don't need to set when I use a analog sound card.
