Hello everybody,
I just bought some new hardware but i can't get it to work. I bought the following: An Asus A8V Deluxe, AMD64 3200+ CPU and a Inno3d GeForce 6600 graphics card with 256mb ram. My problem is that i can't get the GF card to work with the nvidia-drivers; even on windows 2k and XP. I posted into this category because i'm not sure this is a software issue
When i install the driver, x won't start anymore, it just hangs on a black screen, and i can't even switch to any vc's anymore.
I am running the stock kernel 2.6.13 from current, and the nvidia driver is the latest one.
Here is the output of the xorg.log file, i hope somebody will be able to help me.

Have you removed the dri support in xorg.conf?
Nvidia doesn't use this if i remember correct.
And then:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): OpenGL is only supported in depths 16 and 24
Have you set the default depth???
Add this line to xorg.conf in the Screen section:
DefaultDepth 16
My nvidia-card must have this line to work correct
Don't know if this help, but you can try

Well, i uncommented the "dri" line and added the defaultdepth 16, but i still get the same errors. Thanks for the advice though I think the following lines of the xorg.log show where the problem lies; but i can't understand what it means ...

nope.....
you need to comment out the dri line and GLcore
add load glx
turn off asny fancy options you have such as renderAccel
Offline
sorry to disappoint you, i still get the same errors and the x server output still looks the same. I am seriously beginning to suspect some hardware failure here. But why the heck does the card work with the "nv" driver then? :S

Post your xorg.conf file at pastebin.com and put a link here. Just so we can make sure nobody's getting their wires crossed

edid error...
thats your monitor not nvidia check you have the modelines and refresh rates correct
if the are add
Options IgnoreEdid "true"
to the card section of your xorg.conf its a valid nvidia flag for this issue
as the card and monotor ain't talikng nicely....
Offline
Well right now i'm running 1280x1024 @ 24 bpp, with the "nv" driver, and i'm not having any problems (i never had, with the "nv" driver). So i really don't think that's the problem. Thanks for explaining what the EDID error meant, i was wondering about that one.
Right now i'm considering to update the bios on my motherboard, since i think that might solve the problem. I already tried updating the nvidia-bios, but didn't find any new flash images.

Thats the point.
when you are useing the nvidia driver the card and monitor aren'y syncing porpoerly, nv is a different driver so same issue does not affect it, further done your log, it goes on to say that it is dropping you to fb as the mode cannot be obtained, this is where it is failing as the fb provided by the nvidia driver is next to useless.
Offline
The sync ranges are correct, i'm sure, but i tried to pass the following line to the driver anyways:
Option "IgnoreEdid" "true"
and, as expected, it made no difference. i still get those NVIDIA WAIT lines in the log, everything goes black and nothing responds
Thanks for the help anyways, i really appreciate the help i get in this forum.

sorry dude its ignoreEDID.....
here is a list of known nvidia card opt try a few see if you can get a result...

You won't believe this;
I've tried quite a few things now, and after i installed xp and updated the bios on my motherboard, my nvidia card worked like a dream. On xp. So i thought i could just install arch again and everything would be fine. But guess what? It doesn't work under arch!
I guess i'll try out some of the other distros out there, probably the 64bit SUSE and maybe slamd64, but it'll only be a matter of time for me to get back to arch, no doubt. I just hope the trouble with the driver is solved by then.
