[SOLVED] Cant change settings using xfdesktop

I have been using xfce for over a year now. Recently (a month ago), my desktop went black. I can still start xfdesktop from the applications menu, but none of the changes that I opt for happen. I tried starting xfdesktop from the terminal (/usr/bin/xfdesktop) and bingo! The program works just fine and I can make all the changes, alter the desktop picture, etc. But after rebooting, none of the changes persist and I am back with a black desktop screen.
This problem seems specific to xfdesktop since the panels and other settings are working normally. Any leads? Also an explanation as to why this happens?

Re: [SOLVED] Cant change settings using xfdesktop

I had this problem few months ago due to messed up pam.conf. Is your problem solved?
