E17, black screen on login. (not even cursor)

Okay so, I'm new to Arch, and beginner with linux (I used ubuntu for some time a couple of months ago), with Arch i installed GNOME with it initially, but i wanted to try something new so i decided to try E17, since my notebook is kinda old and lack on resources.

I installed "enlightenment 17" via pacman and after that i used the "enlightenment17-svn" from the AUR.

Everytime i try to log into E17 it just gives me a black screen and i have to restart.

Any help please? I want to use E17 so much ahah it looks amazing!

PS: i tried using the search function here and on google, but it didn't help much

Welcome to the boards.

Please see How To Ask Questions The Smart Way; providing helpful information
will help the community help you.

Some of the information that is missing from your post includes: how you are starting X, what is in your logs, can you get to a TTY from the black screen, etc...

Re: E17, black screen on login. (not even cursor)

I would look at the Xorg logs and journalctl for errors.
Can you change to a different TTY once you get the black screen; ie., Ctrl-Alt-{F2-F6}?

Re: E17, black screen on login. (not even cursor)

Well i dont know much about this, but to keep you from reading all, it seems that something is wrong with the fonts and something wrong with vesa (should i install it? i installed only the AMD video driver)

Install vesa and see if it helps.I had e17(not e17-svn) installed before and it worked great.

Re: E17, black screen on login. (not even cursor)

To reiterate: what else have you tried? Did you even read the article I posted?
We can't be expected to just push guesses out there in the vain hope of alighting on your issue.

Try some troubleshooting; restart Gnome to make sure it isn't a graphics card issue, check your e17 config, blah blah blah...

In short, make some effort if you want us to help you.

Re: E17, black screen on login. (not even cursor)

Yes, I've tried/did what you mentioned.

Okay so:

1. When my screen turns black, it seems like the laptop monitor turned off

2. When i ran "exec enlightenment_start", it shows a text and right after it logs out (or shuts down the console). I can't seem to read it, any ideas where it might be?

3. Restarting Gnome is still fine, so i guess no prolem on the graphics card.

4. Also tried reinstalling E17, still the same

Thanks smile

Re: E17, black screen on login. (not even cursor)

I have this same issue, i wiped my .e folder to restart all the changes, also deleted the .cache/efreet folder like Rasterman told me once, but it doesn't start. I can't get to any TTY after that too, all the screen turns black. I start E from startx, but because of this i've been using DWM.

Re: E17, black screen on login. (not even cursor)

I had a similar problem and resolved it by removing all the e* packages (I had the e-svn package and its dependencies installed), deleting the .e folder and then installing the enlightenment17 package.

You could also try the steps in this forum post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=152088

Re: E17, black screen on login. (not even cursor)

I tried installing Arch from scratch and stalling E17 right after X, but no luck again. Still the same, no mouse, no TTY, it really looks like the screen is turned off!

Re: E17, black screen on login. (not even cursor)

well I don't know how enlightenment17-svn is set but if it is grabbing the latest that is under heavy development becoming e18 currently.... Also while it may build be sure that all your EFL packages are coming from svn as well as a lot of under the hood changes have been made over the past month....

personally I would go with all the packages from community... here is the package list from community
ecore
e_dbus
edje
eet
eeze
efreet
enia
eio
elementary
embryo
enlightenment17
ethumb
evas
evas_generic_loaders

I think you can just tag and svn onto them svn when using yaourt or whatever you are pulling from AUR be sure to wipe your ~/.e and ~/.elementary folders if switching between AUR and community packages.

Also  be sure your using the software compositor or just turn it off completely

Also I didn't see mention of what model of video card you have, however it is pull the radeon driver in on load so you may want manually do an sudo  modprobe radeon and when you did try vesa it was not found so you probably don't have it installed so you may need to install xf86-video-vesa and you may want to try the framebuffer driver xf86-video-fbdev.

I use the catalyst driver from the catalyst-hd234k repo for what it's worth ( catalyst-hook to be exact )
