Laptop switches off at random

I run a dual-boot Windows7/Linux laptop with an i7 quad-core processor and 4GB of RAM.
On Debian, I was having an issue where out of the blue, I would be typing and suddenly the keyboard would jam -- whichever key I was pressing would just repeat -- and  then the laptop would eventually just switch off, with no shutdown procedure.
After I installed Arch, this stopped happening.. until last night, when this issue happened 3 times within a space of 2-3 hours. At all times the only thing running was a web browser (Firefox).

Features:

  • There is no overheating involved as far as I can tell (the critical temperature threshold is at least 100 degrees and the laptop was nowhere near that.)

  • The screen doesn't lock up

  • USB peripherals (keyboards and mice) work fine during the jam.

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? Any more info I can provide? It is quite a serious issue and highly detrimental to my work.

Edit: Forgot to say, this issue is not present on Windows7.

Re: Laptop switches off at random

If possible post your dmesg output to a pastebin on the net somewhere so we can have a look at it.

I will try to next time it happens (it's unpredictable). How do I make sure I'm getting the dmesg from up until the crash instead of the dmesg from the current boot?

Ok, it finally happened again. This is the journal up to the crash: http://sprunge.us/YcGQ
Here is dmesg from the next boot: http://sprunge.us/TYBX

Re: Laptop switches off at random

I hate bumping like this but this is really becoming an irritating problem. It's happened at least four times today. Now the mouse has started freezing up at well. There doesn't seem to be anything useful in the journal or dmesg. Are there any other ways I can troubleshoot this? Run a livecd?

Re: Laptop switches off at random

Have you tried adjusting the keyboard repeat and delay rate?  This looks similar to your problem:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … comments/2

The suggestion seems to be to adjust the repeat rate and delay.  Not that this is necessarily a fix.  You might want to file a bug report as well.

Re: Laptop switches off at random

Just want to bump this because this has started happening very frequently. There's nothing in the journal for up to 15 minutes before the halt. There's nothing right before the halt. There's no indication of what is going wrong.

This issue only happens on linux (Debian, Arch) and not on Windows. Memtest is clean. I have yet to test with a LiveCD. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the issue could be?
