beep does not work

Hi,

I have alsa installed and this

speaker-test -t sine -f 1000 -l 2 2>&1

works (it sounds)
but beep command does not produce any output.

Any hints?

speaker-test tests your standalone (or in-built, if you have a laptop) speakers, whereas beep uses the PC speaker, they're different bits of hardware.

It's possible that your motherboard doesn't have a speaker, or you may have blacklisted the pcspkr module, which is needed to use the PC speaker.

How can I test if my motherboard have PC Speaker?
In alsamixer "Speaker" appers.

Do you get any BIOS beep when the machine powers on? If so see whether beep works in the operating system when run from the root account. If that produces a sound then there could be a permissions problem on the device (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1599916 ). If that doesn't produce any sound I'm afraid you'll have to examine physically the mobo carefully to see whether it has a speaker.
