KDE 4.10. problems

Hello,

Yesterday I upgrade KDE from 4.9.5 to 4.10. All went perfect but now, some apps like Kmess and Gajim doesn' t use the KDE notifications and use their own notifications ( a green window in the case of gajim and in kmess a pop up on the middle of the top panel, they look terrible ) Anyone nows how to restore the kde notifications ?

P.D: Antoher problem I have is that the device notificator now always says that I have a mounted 0b floppy disk.

Make sure you've got the notifications widget enabled in the system tray settings (right click on the sys tray).

Thank you, now I have notifications again. But the problem with the device manager cointinues. It shows a Floppy disk with 0 bytes size, I can' t access the data ( because this device doesn' t exist ) and I can' t umount, and is always on the try. I checked fstab file and there is nothing strange. It could be a bug of udisks ? This is the output of the command udisks --dump.

udisks --dump

Re: KDE 4.10. problems

I have the same problem with an empty floppy disk in the device notifier. I don't even have a floppy drive anymore, btw. smile

Re: KDE 4.10. problems

Nice catch, arch_spain, it's a udisks2 bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1054414
I've had it for weeks but never bothered to look into it until now. Turns out disabling floppy drives in your BIOS solves (well, hides) the problem, assuming you don't have and need an actual floppy drive.

I don't know if it is a bug... how do you mounty a floppy otherwise?

Re: KDE 4.10. problems

I upgraded from KDE 4.9.5 to KDE 4.10.0 couple of days ago using official repo. But I have got some problems after upgrading. Whenever I try to open files in  kwrite, gwenview or okular, they crash. Kate does not even start at all.

Here is the terminal output when opening pdf file(I opend okular from terminal)

[jahidul@archbang ~]$ okular

For Kwrite:

Re: KDE 4.10. problems

@jahid65
If you use Archbang, I don't think it's a good choice to use also KDE there.
You'd be better off installing Arch Linux instead, with KDE as DE.

 mv .kde4 kde4-old

So you will have to configure KDE from the scratch, but will work.

When updated my system KDE didn't even start, now I don't have notifications, configuration for two screens doesn't work as expected, and many more bugs than KDE 4.9
I almost had forgotten why do most people hate Linux until this update.

Offtopic

I came here looking for a solution to my KDE 4.10 problems, even thoug I didn't find it, gave an answer to jahid65's question.
Why did you write here such an offtopic? did you ever read forum rules?

Re: KDE 4.10. problems

juan_sck;
Sorry for that misunderstanding, I apologise for the tone of my last post.
I did not see your suggestion to start a clean with a clean kde config as it appeared immediately below the full quote and with the style applied to code blocks it appeared to be part of the quote. Due to this, and considering the lack of detail when you list your problems, the rest of your comment (especially the last line), appeared to simply be a rant, which is frowned upon according to the Forum Etiquette.

Anyway, did you ensure that the notifications widget is enabled in the systray settings as per my earlier post? It's a new addition for 4.10 and is listed under extra items.

What has happened to the multiscreen config? You might want to consider installing kscreen (currently from the AUR) as that improves multiscreen handling considerably, I believe it's on track to be included in future kde releases in place of the current multiscreen setups.

Re: KDE 4.10. problems

I'm also having trouble with multiscreen since the update. KDE was never very good at this (for me) but it had settled down a lot. Things aren't as bad as they used to be but if I choose to configure the additional screen after hooking my laptop up to a projector, say, KDE then completely ignores my config especially concerning resolution. So I specify, say 1024x768 for both screens under a cloning model and KDE makes it 1366x768 for both so the image on the external monitor is truncated. (I don't like cloning much but I've found the alternatives fail to work well at all under Linux.)

arandr seems to do a much better job but now somebody has mentioned kscreen, I'm wondering if that might not integrate better with KDE and make things a bit smoother?

By the way, I don't think the notifications widget in the systray is new as I was using it under 4.9.xx but I don't remember when it appeared.

arandr seems to do a much better job but now somebody has mentioned kscreen, I'm wondering if that might not integrate better with KDE and make things a bit smoother?

Not much idea about display cloning as I don't use it, but it seems to work with kscreen from a quick test just now.
The neatest thing about kscreen for me is that it (finally) remembers the config you've set for a particular set of screens and will automatically apply it when you connect or disconnect monitors. I don't know how well this works if you've got multiple external monitors you switch between.

By the way, I don't think the notifications widget in the systray is new as I was using it under 4.9.xx but I don't remember when it appeared.

I was under the impression that it was built-in to the systray before and now has been rewritten as a separate QML widget, at any rate it may end up disabled when you update.

Re: KDE 4.10. problems

Thanks. Think I'll give that a try. Though I'm not risking using my laptop at all right now for presentations as it died 3 times mid-presentation last week. (Long story - trying to persuade Lenovo to recognise warranty extension is a fun game for all the family.)

I may just not have noticed with systray since plasma crashed with my old config and I had to redo plasma config from scratch. Three or four times, actually. (Don't use Lancelot widget in 4.10! plasma segfaults with it very reliably.)

So you will have to configure KDE from the scratch, but will work.

When updated my system KDE didn't even start, now I don't have notifications, configuration for two screens doesn't work as expected, and many more bugs than KDE 4.9
I almost had forgotten why do most people hate Linux until this update.

Configuring KDE from the scratch does nothing for me though.
Any ideas on "property "Drive" does not exist" problem?

Re: KDE 4.10. problems

@konart,
I think you might want to open a new thread with details of the problem you're having. This thread is quite old and concerns a particular update from some months ago. Moreover, it contains a bunch of different issues which may or may not be relevant to you, including some which do not even concern Arch. (Those should not be here but they are muddled in with stuff which is about Arch.)

If you, too, are using Archbang, you should ask on their forums. If you are using Arch, you need to post the errors etc. which you see here so that people can see what is going on. Does this happen whenever you open particular programmes from Konsole, for example? If so, which programmes? Are the errors the same? Is your system up to date?
