freezing frequently with ati open source driver in 3d games

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiv94VYlHZU

I share similar problem with this. Basically all 3d games freezes frequently, screen goes black and resume after a while. By some testing in game, I can tell that not only the graphics is frozen at those moments but almost the whole game. It freezes even more frequently in my case. Yet gnome-shell and 2d games (even for those with some 3d animation which requires dri and gl acceleration) works totally fine.

I am using an ATI Radean HD5850 with the latest ati open source driver in Arch repo. Does anyone know some solution or workaround or if this is an upstream bug?

Re: freezing frequently with ati open source driver in 3d games

I found a workaround by looking at the dmesg and googling.

It should be an issue related to power managerment. So far setting the profile to "high" (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/At … MS_enabled) works for me. No freezing/resetting anymore.
