Just posting in case someone has the same problem:
Ran an update last night which presumably upgraded network related packages, after rebooting I could no longer access internet. Running
ip addrreturned no IP address for eth0. I changed /etc/conf.d/netcfg from
NETWORKS=(last) to
NETWORKS=ethernet ethernet is a profile defined to use DHCP that I was using before. This fixed the problem. Presumably it was just the system's memory of which network was used last that got b0rked by the update and I can now change that line back.
