Internet Connection Starts then Stops

I installed base Arch on one of my hard drives (other has debian) by ftp without a problem.  When I went to install further packages on reboot (and dhcpcd) pacman worked with no problem then after a very short period stopped mid download.  My ethernet card is shown in lspci and lsmod and ifconfig show the eth0.  dhcpcd appears to be running but when I ctrl c out of pacman I cannot ping isp.

I've searched and noticed others have same problem but I never see a solution.

Any ideas?
Thanks
