Catalyst 12.9 woes

I'm glad to see Catalyst back in the official repos!  Yes, there are still some issues with it, but it has been relatively good for me (coming from the unofficial catalyst repo).

On my desktop, I have a distinct problem.  Catalyst 12.9 worked great for me, until I was informed that it should function properly with xorg 1.13.  I commented out the xorg112 repo and upgraded, but found that I cannot get any video output post-boot.  My monitor simply goes to sleep and will not wake up.  I cannot change VTs or anything.  Had to SSH into my system and downgrade to xorg 1.12 to get my system back.

Anybody have any ideas as to what could be wrong?  Is there a regression that needs fixing in my xorg.conf?  My laptop works wonderfully with xorg 1.13... Just my desktop seems to have an issue.

Re: Catalyst 12.9 woes

Can you e.g. post the X log?

It's down at the moment.  Will post when I can SSH into it next.

Re: Catalyst 12.9 woes

OK, here's the log.  Gotta be honest, my questions are usually ignored.  I usually post logs and extra information and everything, but I've gotten kind of jaded for having been completely ignored in the forums for the past several years (Arch user since 2005.  can't remember when I actually joined the forums...).

Anyways, the important stuff.  Here's the requested log:

Re: Catalyst 12.9 woes

1. Below your username you have 'Registered: 2008-02-08', so probably that's when you joined the forums.
2. What kind of AMD hardware is it: which APU / graphics card?
3. You're using linux-ck, have you tried the stock one?
4. Move your xorg.conf somewhere else and try running w/o it.
5. Does your laptop have the same (or at least similar) hardware & software installed? Catalyst & linux-ck?

Re: Catalyst 12.9 woes

1. Good catch.  That would indeed be my join date.
2. Radeon 5700 dedicated graphics card.
3. I have tried both linux-ck and stock (and have run DKMS autoinstall on both)
4. Didn't realize Catalyst could run without xorg.conf these days.  I will give that a shot.
5. Laptop is an r600 APU.  It is, however, running linux-ck & Catalyst

Again, thanks for all of your help!

Removed xorg.conf.  Didn't put my monitor in DPMS, but did crash X.  Here's the Xorg.0.log:

Re: Catalyst 12.9 woes

So... seems like there's not much anybody (read: Karol, the only person who's bothered to offer any help whatsoever to me on this forum in YEARS) can think to find in here.  I'm probably going to try a complete reinstall soon.

At this point, I've tried a lot of various things to get this to work.  Currently, even downgrading won't give me anything but a VT now.  I'm currently getting a "no screens found" error with startx, and nothing I've tried will fix this.  If anyone has any suggestions whatsoever, I am more than willing to listen.  But this issue has me at wit's end.  It seems like the fglrx module isn't working at all, even with the vanilla kernel.  I'm not able to access my log at the moment, but I'm basically getting a "module failed to load" error for glx, fglrx, etc.  I've tried rebuilding the module, and I get no module errors on boot, only with startx.

Re: Catalyst 12.9 woes

Arch is bleeding-edge which means that proprietary drivers often don't keep up with it.  I specifically bought a machine with Intel graphics for that very reason - they have a well maintained and open-source driver.  Have you tried xf86-video-ati?  The open-source driver?  It may work better it may not.  It definitely isn't better for gaming but it is there for basic tasks and even Compiz.  It's unfortunate to say it but a cycled release distribution, like Ubuntu, generally keeps the proprietary drivers in better order as all parties involved have a clear target to aim at.

Your post has lots of views, but not many suggestions - sorry dude, if I had anything concrete in addition to the above I'd definitely suggest.

Re: Catalyst 12.9 woes

Perhaps you want to post in our "official" AMD Catalyst thread next time you have issues? I'm sure you'd get help there!

I'd suggest completely removing the driver, it's configuration files etc and starting from scratch. First try on the default kernel and if that works, try linux-ck. If even that fails it could be DKMS, it doesn't work as it should yet I believe. In that case, try Catalyst Hook or Catalyst Generator.

EDIT: And I recommend using an xorg.conf file.

Re: Catalyst 12.9 woes

Once the Xorg.conf file is moved, did you by any chance regenerate one  using:

aticonfig --initial

If not, it's worth a go, since Catalyst tends to not work at all without a properly configured xorg.conf, at least on my system. YMMV.

Re: Catalyst 12.9 woes

Thanks for the replies, all!  It's nice to get some feedback and not have my questions fall on seemingly deaf ears.  I've been using Linux for 10+ years now, and while I do know my way around pretty well, I do occasionally run into an issue that I just can't figure out.  Bouncing ideas in this forum has simply been frustrating.  You'll see my post count is low.  That's because I've reached a point of "no one's going to help me, so why bother?"  The forums have honestly become my last-ditch resort.  Didn't have much luck in IRC either.  I apologize for my frustration.  I realize now that I was coming off as a whiny jackass.

Anyways, the more important issue is this:

I did a lot more testing before I posted last night, but was too tired to really put my steps together in a post.  Now that I've got some coffee, here goes:

I completely stripped out the CK kernel and focused instead on the vanilla kernel.  Same problem.  Monitor went to sleep and I couldn't even access a VT.  Xorg log showed nothing out of order.  Stripped everything down.  Uninstalled xorg server and related files, catalyst-{dkms,utils}, etc.  Cleared out all xorg configuration files except for a couple of input files in xorg.conf.d.

I then reinstalled everything pulling from the xorg112.  Or, at least, I attempted to.  It seems pacman didn't remove a whole slew of files during the uninstall.  I manually went through and removed all conflicting files, then went about the installation.  Installation went fine, and the system messages from the DKMS install were normal.  Did my "aticonfig --initial"

I rebooted and got to a VT.  Checking the log file again, it appeared that the glx and fglrx modules didn't load, and therefor "no screens found" prevented X from loading.  It seems that DKMS didn't do its job after all.  I won't have any time to work on this until Monday, but I'll most likely give over to the unoffical repos again.  I'll try DKMS again in another version or so.  Thanks for this suggestion, Unia.  Usagi, AFAIK, the catalyst driver does in fact need xorg.conf still.  It was suggested that I give it a shot without an xorg.conf file for testing.

As an aside, I'd like to respond to HeadKase.  I'm well familiar with Arch and its philosophies.  The rolling release and KISS principles are something that I particularly enjoy.  I could never fathom running Ubuntu again (used it for a little while back in 2005...), though I always recommend Linux Mint to first-time Linux users.  If I were to go to a traditional distro, my choice would most likely be Mint.  I have used the radeon drivers quite a bit.  It does work quite well for the majority of use cases, and I give it another go every now and again.  I don't use it on my laptop because its powersaving (and occasional performance issues, especially in regards to video playback) leaves a lot to be desired on a mobile platform.  On my desktop, it has more issues with video tearing than the proprietary driver, and I am an avid gamer.  I look forward to the day when the FOSS drivers will suit all of my needs.  That day simply has not arrived yet.  Though, with the open-sourcing of the XVBA library, that day should be coming much sooner.

Unia, I've looked and posted before in the ATI bar and grill.  When I have issues, that thread usually solves them.  I wish that there were an ATI subforum, however, as finding particular issues and responses in there can be a bit unwieldly.  I should probably "watch" that thread in the future, though.
