[SOLVED] Black screen when switching from X (suspend, tty switch, etc)

I have a peculiar problem. I've got an Acer Aspire One D270-26Dkk netbook. I've installed latest Arch Linux (Linux 3.7.5-1 32 bit) on it with Xorg and i3wm. I followed the Aspire One Arch Wiki instructions and installed the xf86-video-intel and xf86-input-synaptics packages.

After I startx everything works fine inside until, I try to switch to any other tty, then I get a black screen and I would have to reboot because switching to any tty will have the same black screen. Also if I close the netbook lid and open it again after starting X I will also have the same black screen. If there happens to be some text outputted to those black screens it will appear as green blobs.

I have no xorg.conf file, and if I try to generate one with Xorg -configure it'll tell me "number of created screens does not match number of detected devices".

I have systemd with grub2, and I also installed apcid and pm-utils.

lsmod shows me that I use gma500_gfx if that helps.

Re: [SOLVED] Black screen when switching from X (suspend, tty switch, etc)

I have heard of a lot of problems like this with the 3.7 kernel. Do you still have problems if you downgrade to the 3.6 kernel (see downdrade from the AUR to help you) or if you use the lts kernel?

Re: [SOLVED] Black screen when switching from X (suspend, tty switch, etc)

Thanks for replying.

I downgraded from 3.7 to 3.6 and had same problems. As for linux-lts I could now change tty's without black screen appearing, but when I close the lid and open it again the computer powers on but the screen is turned off completely.

I also tried to install kernel-netbook kernel but when it boots up it says: "loading initial ramdisk" and gets  stuck there.

From where did you get the kernel-netbook? Have you correctly rebuilt the initrd for such kernel? By the way I doubt it will fix the problem. Netbooks are just ordinary computers and should not have such problems. This seems to be a kernel bug. As a workaround, you can disable the sleep mode when you close the lid by:
HandleLidSwitch=ignore
(or put something else like hibernate or poweroff). Another thin you can try if you have the patience is to try the latest RC 3.8 kernel from kernel.org. Maybe this has been fixed?

Well, I think I'll wait for the next arch kernel update. Meanwhile I'll disable suspend on lid close. Do you know how often arch updates its kernel?

It updates it as soon as it is officially available. Sometimes the new kernel is put quarantine in /testing for a few weeks.

Re: [SOLVED] Black screen when switching from X (suspend, tty switch, etc)

hi I have the same netbook. The driver it is using is xf86-video-vesa as it is a PowerVR video chip and not an intel one.
To get it to work install xf86-video-fbdev.

There are drivers available to get hardware acceleration but intel has removed the download for the files a certain pkgbuild relies on. If you have an ftp server I can upload the pkg.tar.xz files for you however I forgot how to compile everything.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_GMA3600

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=144445 (user contributed pkgbuilds later)

Thanks very much theblazehen big_smile
Installing xf86-video-fbdev did the trick smile
I can play HD videos without hardware acceleration, but it does hang sometime.
It would be great if you can archive the packages and upload it to some filesharing service like qfpost.com .

Hi sorry for the wait but i've been quite busy.  http://www.qfpost.com/file/d?g=HZ6d9N791

Download this and extract with tar -xzvf files.tar.bz2.
cd arch.
Then install with sudo pacman -U *.pkg.tar.xz
