No Sound with Alsa

The Problem:  I get no sound from arch.

What I tried:  Setting system volume to maximum
                    Unmuting and maxing alsamixer volumes
                    Googling and googling and googling
Reading the Wiki article about alas
                    Searching this forum

Information:  I'm using an Asrock integrated sound card. I'm also running the Enlightenment desktop environment / window manager, if it matters.

Please help; I need sound!

Thanks!

Re: No Sound with Alsa

Are you using Pulseaudio?
Please post the output of loginctl session-status 1

Re: No Sound with Alsa

Use tab complete after loginctl session-status for your session number...

Re: No Sound with Alsa

Okay.  You are not using session 1.  Use loginctl --no-pager to get a list of the active sessions and replace the '1' with an appropriate number.

Edit:  Or do what Jasonwran said.  I did not know about that trick.

Re: No Sound with Alsa

Wouldn't loginctl list-sessions show what number his session is?

Yes; but then you have to re-enter the session-status command with the correct session number... With completion, it is just the one command (assuming only one logged in user).

Re: No Sound with Alsa

I tried using tab complete and it didn't work for me (bash).  Are you using a different shell?  All it did for me was list the files and directories within the directory I was in.

Re: No Sound with Alsa

I downloaded

pacman -S bash-completion

I don't know what to do with it, though : )

loginctl session-status 2

Gives me alot of information which would take a long time to type out, so is there anything in particular I should give you, or should i type it all out?

At a minimum, what does it report about 'Active'  ?

Don't mean to be butting in, but the command doesn't offer anything about active:

I guess I should have asked, "What does it say about state ?"  Ans: It should be Active.

I do not know the difference between on line and active; but I've a hunch it may be at the root of the problem you are chasing on the other thread.

Re: No Sound with Alsa

The difference between "active" and "online" is explained in the documentation[0]:

The following states are currently known: offline (user not logged in at all), lingering (user not logged in, but some user services running), online (user logged in, but not active, i.e. has no session in the foreground), active (user logged in, and has at least one active session, i.e. one session in the foreground)...

0. http://www.freedesktop.org/software/sys … state.html

# edit: just read ewaller's comment about your other thread: you can activate your session, see man loginctl.

Re: No Sound with Alsa

Given my problem (and solution) in my own thread, the op should probably look into how he is starting X, and perhaps post the config if he is using a display manager.

Edit: Also, AlecB, you don't need to type the output from the loginctl command.  You should be able to just copy and paste like I did.  Just highlight the output in your terminal then middle click to paste (make sure to backet the output you paste with [ code ] [ /code ] only remove the spaces).

Re: No Sound with Alsa

I don't.  I usually run a pretty vanilla alsa (no pulseaudio or major config modifications).  My problem wasn't really with alsa, it was with logind, it only effected alsa because I wasn't root/audio.  I do wonder about the access control list shown in 'ls -l' for my /dev/snd devices (it's the trailing '+') and if this isn't something new in for the driver (it isn't present in the wiki example).

Re: No Sound with Alsa

Well, lets dig in....

Is this a laptop, or a desktop?  If it is a desktop, the speakers are connected, turned on, and have power (if required), right?

What are the outputs of
aplay -l
and
aplay -L
??

Edit:  And for an evil little test, what happens with:
aplay < /dev/urandom
.... You can kill that last one with ctrl-c   tongue

Re: No Sound with Alsa

It looks like your Alsa output is going to the PulsaAudio driver.  This allows programs that only know Alsa to work with PA.

But, from post #18, PulseAudio is not running.  So....

Do you want to use PulseAudio?  If so, it needs to be started.

If not,  You need to configure Alsa to use an output driver that talks to your Analog Hardware (Card 0, Device 0)

Re: No Sound with Alsa

When I try to start pulseaudio, I get

W: [pulseaudio] core-util.c: Failed to open configuration file '/home/alec/.config/pulse//daemon.conf': Permission denied
W: [pulseaudio] daemon-conf.c: Failed to open configuration file: Permission denied

My speakers still just give static. Loud static.
